You said the TV works part of the time. Have you tried different inputs to see if it is isolated to the antenna?
If it is isolated to the antenna it sounds like a bad coaxial connection.

The TV worked part of the time (not well, but we were able to get a local channel or two) last camping season. We've yet to get a picture on it this year.

I really appreciate everyone's ideas. My husband is hoping to be able to fix this himself..well with some help from y'all, that is.

Winegard Video selector switches do NOT have an internal fuse like the regular Winegard booster wall plate. When you have a SHORT in the COAX cable from the Winegard to the Roof top antenna, that light will go out (shutting it OFF). So, you have a SHORTED coax, most likely corrosion at the roof top area, Doug

Has he checked for 12 volts DC at the antenna head?
Diconnect the coaxial cable from antenna,Connect voltmeter to coaxial cable, connect positive lead to coaxial center and the negative lead to the outside. (Yes, it doesn't really matter on DC). The voltage reading should be the same as coming out of video switch. This may show whether there is a real bad connection.
Make sure the switch is on! See if LED stays lit.

I think you meant to say "...it DOES really matter on DC..."

This is the reason I went with the Jack antenna. Came with a new plug-in amp. Never did find the Winegaurd one, but for $50, all the problems went away.

The digital meter on DC doesn't care about polarity, yes the antenna system does.

Well...now that I read that more carefully, I stand completely corrected. I have a few digital meters, but was thinking of my old analog meter, which does care

Thanks for making me think a bit, enblethen

All of you have helped us think... thank you!

Hopefully my husband can figure it out now.

It's fixed!

After much troubleshooting, discussing (& a bit of cussing), testing, and retesting he figured out the digital converter box was bad.

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions, he tried them all!

Enblethen has it. Antenna boost power gets there via the coax. Likely that faded half quality picture last season was w/o any amplification. Buy or borrow 50 ft of coax, connect to antenna, then back into video selector. If you have a good picture its just the cable.

Thanks "badger" my husband was trying to find a longer coax in the garage last night. You know... it's one of those "it's around here somewhere" items that may or may not actually be around any more.
ha ha!
I think he has the same idea in mind.
