I think the problems with the big barges is they only hold 20 or so RV's. That means you have to split the cost of the barge only 20 ways. It can't be cheap to operate a barge like that for 7 days so a week on that thing is going to be pretty expensive. I found an old website from the 90's that said a week on the big barge could cost as much as $5000. Although I'd love to do it and it looks like fun, for $5000 I can spend a couple of months on the road versus one week on a barge.

pretty expensive but it wasn't that much more than some of the caravans you see advertised.

I wouldn't pay those prices to go on a caravan either, with the exception of going into Mexico. But since I have no desire in the world to go into Mexico then I don't have to worry about doing that at all.

i agree wholeheartedly about caravans and mexico. at one point we had wanted to do the Copper Canyon trip but now that we have the time and $ those trips are not being made. caravans...no desire to travel with a group that big. can't imagine there's a lot of time away from the group or the flexibility to stay an extra day here and there. no thanks. but a barge trip...*that* would be a once in a lifetime experience.

I think I remember there being a barge operation on the Shuswap many years ago. Just had a quick look and saw nothing relative to a barge to pack an RV.

There is a Caltrans diesel powered barge that takes you across the Delta to Ryer Island in California to an RV park called Snug Harbor. I have taken that trip 3 times with our old 5th wheel with a 18 foot boat attached. Yes double towing. The barge holds many cars or 4 or 5 RVs. Best done at high tide as the entry and exit points can be steep at low tides. Pretty cool. That would be a nice rental.

If you could rent that one you would get very far because it's a cable ferry. It doesnt have a prop or rudder. The diesel engine turns
pullies that pull you across the river on the cable.

Not going to take the time to look it up but I believe you are mistaken.

We took the ferry called The Real McCoy. It is a diesel powered free running ferry.
The one you speak of is the much smaller of the 2 that go to Ryer Island. It is a cable ferry called the J- Mac Ferry. It goes across Steamboat Slough.

The Real McCoy is on the Rio Vista side of the Sacramento River.
I understand that the new ferry is called The Real McCoy 2.

Well then you have my curiosity up so I'll look it up. I thought all those ferries were cable ferries. I'll let you know.

I looked it up and you're right, that ferry is a regular ferry. It does cross the deep water shipping channel so that's probably why they used that type of ferry there versus the cable because they didn't want the cable across the shipping chanel. Every other ferry on the Delta is a cable ferry but The Real McCoy is not. I have been on it, but it's probably been 20 years ago.

Copper Canyon and Barge caravans would be on my "win the lottery" list of things to do.

yes, they do, pat. not begruding anyone who enjoys that sort of thing...it's just something that we're not interested in. we did find ourselves behind a caravan on a 2-lane road a few years back. the pack was doing around 40 in a 55 zone. that wasn't a lot of fun.
