I have and carry in the bin, an 18" round Directv dish antenna just like I had on the house nearly 20 years ado. The house now has an oval antenna with the ability to get three satelittes. (You need to get two satellites to get the local channels.) I just take a receiver from the house to the motor home. The motor home has an automatic dome antenna, but when parked in and under trees It may not be able to "see" the satelitte, so I get out the old round dish and set it up on a tripod in a spot that can get reception. To set up you just need to know the zip code of where you are parked and do the aiming until you get the signal as shown on the TV you have hooked into.

I use the Winegard SK-3005 HD antenna on my roof of my coach. The antenna looks similar to those that are mounted on your stick house but it will automatically aim with the push of a button. This antenna hooks up to the same DirecTV receiver that I use at home when we are not on the road. The Winegard SK-3005 costs about $1500 so a lot of people opt for the manual aim antennas or tripod mount antennas that sit on the ground. I like the convenience of the automatic antenna.

I have a roof top automatic and also carry a tripod mounted portable for the occasions I am in the trees. You cannot rely on just one or you will be disappointed a lot.

you can rely on the one IF you use the portable ones! But I only use the ones on a tripod and have only been in one or two spots that I could not get a signal.(due to tree coverage)But you couldn't get a signal there no matter what you had!

When I got my direct tv service the installer brought out the same dish as what they would put on the house. I then got a tripod for it. This worked good except for when it was in the way of the mowers. I figured out that I could mount the dish on the top of the mh to the luggage rack. This took care of the mower problem unless of trees. The problem is that not all of their dishes are compatable with all of the sattalites. We were outside of San Antonio for a year and direct tv came out and hooked us up with a dvr and the local channels this was great. Then we moved to Branson Mo. and the dish is not compatable with the local channels here. Direct tv told me that if I want to get the local channels where ever we go I would need to buy a special dish for this. I said the heck with that why spend money for that.

We have the carry out and the 222 vip box and love it. Made a ladder mount that I can take the carryout off of and put within fifty feet of the coach. Like all of them have to set it up the first time but has worked anywere we go.

All you need to do is call DTV with the CG address and they will connect you to the local channels for that area. No other equipment needed.

For a number of years we carried a portable satellite dish for DirecTV. We are usually out sightseeing every day and move often to a new campground, so the frequent set up and packing of the antenna got to be a PITA. Two years ago I installed a Winegard crank up antenna on the roof, which eliminated the set up/packing issue and freed up some basement storage space. I find it easier to aim at the satellite with the roof top antenna. This antenna doesn't receive high definition channels (neither did our old portable dish). As already mentioned, trees can be more of an issue with a fixed location antenna, vs. a portable, but we don't travel so we can watch TV.
