I thought I knew as much about border crossing procedures by now as possible, but there is one question I am not sure about.
Do vehicles with the 10 year permit have to pay the new deposit?
I know those with existing permits do not, but I have not talked to anyone who got a new 10 year permit this year to see if they had to pay.
Anyone know for sure?
Truck Campers are still a big Gray area. I have encountered about 3 of them who got 10 year permits. They either consider a Truck & Camper as a single unit and eligible for a 10 year permit, or they ignore the camper and just deal with the truck, in which case the camper is not on any paperwork, and the truck is given a permit (6 month). In that instance, they treat the camper like a truck bed canopy. I have never been asked for any paperwork on my actual camper in 4 seasons. It has never been questioned on my return by anyone taking VIN numbers to cancel the permit. I carry my sales receipt, just in case.

We did not have to pay a deposit on our 5th wheel this year, only on our pick up truck. We crossed Jan 2, 2012 at Eagle Pass.

Why don't you get a 10 year permit next year. No deposit required and then you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Paul - I think that if you carry ownership papers for the camper and it is not required to be licensed in your home province, that it should be, as you say, in the same realm as a canopy and not require any kind of permit. The banjercito at your chosen crossing may not agree, but in reality it has no motor and as such should be of no interest to them. RYV

I could probably manage to get a 10 year permit if I did it on line, but then again I worry about being pulled over & there being problems. I would still cancel it annually as I don't know how long I will have this combo.

There is no deposit requires for MH's or other RV's with the 10 year permit. A truck camper does not require any special permit. BUT it might go on the truck papers. The truck will get a 6 month permit and require a deposit. That would make sense as Adunana would want to know that the camper has not been sold in Mexico. But as we all know every crossing is different!

We have had this dance before about truck/campers. You might want to read this again.

About 2 years ago I got a different camper. I didn't inform the government. How would they know? The permit only has my truck and cargo trailer VIN numbers
Just go for the 10 year permit and quit stressing and be done with it. I haven't worried about my driving my truck in Mexico, legally, since 2006.

They have never added my campers VIN to my permit and I have crossed at both Nogales & Lukeville where they usually come out & look. Thta is now 4 years. As I mentioned, I have seen people who got a 10 year permit. If I wanted a 10 year permit I would either try to apply on line or remove the jacks and argue it was an integrated vehicle (Class C).
It does seem odd they never add the camper when a small less valuable item like a scooter is added or the trailer it is in.
