It's OK with me to post on the Pet Stop. We've had a few threads and many swear by the avoidance training.

I practice in an area where we don't get snake bites, so I've never seen one.

My understanding is that the vaccine does not eliminate the need for treatment after a bite, just makes the bite less likely to be fatal and recovery time less.

Glad your guys had the training and are OK.

Doug, DVM

THANKS !!
Is there a way to copy and paste the post from here over to the pet section ??

The DVM who treated Ryder was from the Seattle area and not used to treating snake bites, She got Him taken care of.

A couple of years ago, Dash saved me and the pups from possibly getting bit. I was hiking with Dash and Lily (Molly hadn't yet joined our jolly household) on the Mount McConnell trail along the Poudre River in Colorado. We were approaching the end of the trail when Dash suddenly stopped and wouldn't go forward. I heard a noise, but didn't identify it as a snake. I looked at Dash again, and he was frozen on the trail, staring at a point ahead of us. I looked closely at the trail and, right where I would have stepped had we continued, was a coiled rattlesnake. I decided to back up and give it plenty of room until it slithered off the trail into the bushes. The thing is, Dash has never had the avoidance training, and had likely never seen a snake before, but he instinctively knew it was not to be approached. Smart dog!!

A Nephew of ours visited from California and I took him desert camping for three days, riding the Prowler UTV.I planned on leaving the toy hauler, take him back to catch his plane and bring the wife & dogs beck to camp some more. After seeing about two dozen tracks where snakes crossed the trail, I canceled the extended camping and took the T/H home. Snakes are leaving their dens now and the desert is NO place for pets. We also encountered a Gila Monster which the dogs may have thought to be something to play with.. Not good..

You are right they will still need vet attention but the shots will save their lives. Even at our home in Wyoming we are at least 30 to 45 minutes away from the vet. When camping we may be even further away. The shots slow the venom and help the dog deal with it until they can get to a vet.

Why is it DOG owners call them pets as if they're the only kind of pet? It's not a PET run or PET area, it's a DOG run or DOG area.

If you want to "split Hairs" thats fine.
I said PETS because some people have cats and they travel with them, My Dad and step-mother for one !!
They would take the cat for a walk on a leash just like many dog owners do.
