It's OK with me to post on the Pet Stop. We've had a few threads and many swear by the avoidance training.

I practice in an area where we don't get snake bites, so I've never seen one.

My understanding is that the vaccine does not eliminate the need for treatment after a bite, just makes the bite less likely to be fatal and recovery time less.

Glad your guys had the training and are OK.

You are right they will still need vet attention but the shots will save their lives. Even at our home in Wyoming we are at least 30 to 45 minutes away from the vet. When camping we may be even further away. The shots slow the venom and help the dog deal with it until they can get to a vet.

We were about 45 minutes from the highway and about the same amount of time to get back into town.

Glad to hear your dog is OK. Our neighbor wasn't so lucky last year, both his dogs got biten by a baby rattler. He didn't realize both had been bitten at first, rushed the one that had signs of a bite to the Vet and by time he got home his other dog had lapsed into a coma and died on the way to Vet. All this happened in our neighorhood on a nature trail. So here in SoCal it can happen anywere, after all this is a semi-desert area.

Very sorry to hear of the loss.
YES, we live in a semi-desert area and snakes are prevalent.
My Borther & SIL lived between Corona and Lake Elsinore for a few years and saw many rattlers. One day their "ankle bitter" dog was barking at something and would not stop, Bro went outside to find a large red diamondback atop some hay bales and the dog was only a few feet away "yapping" at the snake. It can and does happen, We are so lucky to still have 8 paws running around the house.

I have a cat I'd like to tie up in the back yard as an early warning system. I don't know why I ever agreed to have a cat in the house.

Don't worry, the cat knows how I feel about her. She started it! I know she'd tie me up in the yard and feed me to the snakes if she could only figure out how (and if she had thumbs).

Dave you're not alone! I'm a Dog guy, after our last cat met her maker I was done with cats. Then one adopted my wife, at least no hairballs with this one but my favorite thing at night is saying "where's the kitty" to my wire fox, seconds later you hear the dog & can going at it and the cat scramble. Evil, but fun. Don't worry cat lovers, the cat attacks the dog just as often, it's a mutual dislike on their part.

Good info !
I had never heard of the classes. Going to check into those.

Last year we ran into this guy. He came over to us (guessing looking for some shade under the rigs) so we just loaded up and moved on down the trail.
Not sure what kinda rattle snake it is...

NOT sure what kind it is either, but I do know its the kind you stay away from !!

YES, they will find shade in the heat of the day, your truck, TH or UTV might just be the place.

My younger Son knows a co-worker who was bitten while reading a map spread out on the hood of his truck, Mr snake was under the truck staying cool.

Seeing those pics reminds me how much I HATE SNAKES. We had one of them around our camper when we stayed at Coral Pink, the Rangers came around to pick him up. I was more inclined to introduce him to my ATV tire, Ranger won.
