I have had three friends have close encounters with rattlers this year alone. Two on their back porches and one in their garage. Due to the drought the field mice have move into town for water and food; the rattlers are following them. Both our terriers get snake shots.

I thought it would be more than that. Living in the AZ. desert I think we'll take our dogs to a class. How far from the snake are the dogs supposed to be able to detect them? I've seen some pretty big ones and understand they can strike half their length. Most snakes get out of the way, some hold their ground but I've seen some that have a bad attitude and advance.
Thanks.

My 2 1/2 year old Yellow won't go within 10', maybe more.
The 1 year old chocolet gets too close for my liking, he will be going back next year and see if He does better. As far as seeing or hearing them they usually stay pretty far away, smelling them has way too many variables to effect the distance. The thing I was impressed with, the Chocolet was close enough to get bit, but reacted quickly and got out of the way and made sure I was aware the snake was there.
I made sure to praise Him for His actions, but My heart sank when I saw it was a Mojave Green. Glad He is O K
When I talked with the trainer, He said one of the snakes does not have any rattles so the dog picks up the scent instead of the sound and the final "test", the snake is very visable and NOT hiding in the weeds/bushes, so they get tested with smell/sound/sight.

The training goes pretty quick for most dogs, under 10 mins for the yellow and a little longer for the chocolet, so I imagin they could run quite a few dogs thru the class each day.
