Hola Folks,
We just bought one of these in Cancun. Since we were not leaving right away, we elected to set it up ourselves rather that at telmex so that we could save our date for our trip.
He explained how to do it and I thought I was ok.
Today I put the chip that came with the MF180 into my Amigo phone to send the set up BAT message.
The phone immediately asked for a code, so I punched in the PIN that is printed on the chip card. Nada. Then I punched in the PUK code, also on the card. Nada again.
I am wondering if my phone is too old to be compatible with this chip. I notice the chip that comes with the stick is V5.0 and my phone has a V3 chip. The chip looks a little different too.
Any ideas?

You don't need to activate on your phone, leave chip in data card and when you have software installed on you computer(automatic when usb card installed) There is a tab on the software that lets you recharge your account

I am not sure about any of this - but we do have a 180 stick and never took the chip out to put it in the phone - did the guy tell you to do that?? If we run out of time or whatever and have to activate we just put the stick in the computer and do it on the computer. I know nothing about taking the chip out and putting it in the phone. Also, to buy more time you can go to any Oxxo or a lot of other places like the TelCel phone franchise places to buy more time. What we learned is many of them know nothing about the internet and may not know you can buy internet time the same as buying time for a phone. So what you do is just tell them the phone number of the stick - you don't have to say it is for internet or a phone or whatever - just have them put the money on the account. Then, with new funds on the account it will either activate the stick automatically or you just use the control panel for the banda ancha stick that came with the program built into the stick and as I recall you do it like a text (I don't know how to text either) and send the plan code you want such as BAT30 to and put the 5050 number above and send and it works. We had a lot of trouble with this at first because we just did not understand the details of how it worked - people said send BAT30 to 5050 and we had no idea what they meant or how to do it. SO here is what we did - click to bring up the TelCel Internet Banda Ancha Movil screen - this is created when you plug the stick into your computer - the program is built into the stick and will load to your computer where it will remain even if the stick is not plugged in - of course you cannot get online without the stick unless you have WiFi. In the lower left of the control panel for banda ancha is a box that says MESSAGES - click on this and it will open the page that shows the INBOX etc. Click on NEW MESSAGE and another page opens with a SENT TO line which is where you type in 5050 (if that is still the correct number?) and then in the body of the email form just type in the plan you want that you paid for such as BAT30 or MEDIO30 or ALTO30 or whatever - I forget the exact codes - the TelCel website will show all the plans and the costs and you can check your account to see exactly how many pesos you have - and type in the code for the plan you have enough pesos to pay for or that you want that you have enough pesos to cover - if the pesos are not there it will not work. Though you can buy a phone on almost any street corner as far as I know you can only get a banda ancha stick at an official TelCel office which are few and far between. I hope this helps - and that you can figure out what it is I am trying to say - I don't feel I am doing a very good job of explaining.

Brian's explanation is correct.
The problem trying to put the sim card into a phone is that the phone has to be an open phone that allows you to switch sim cards. Most do not.
So just do everything as Brians explained.
When you pay into your phone number account you immedietly get a message in your inbox that tells the pesos were credited to your account.
After you send the bat30 message you immedietly get a reply telling you how much you activated.
If you try to activate before it runs out it will send you a message saying you can't.

Thanks for this. The Telcel guy never mentioned I could just do it on the computer. Sounds much easier than the phone method.
I can switch my chips easily, but I think my phone uses an older chip.
Appreciate the help.

I will be going the Telcel Internet stick route this fall. I will be entering at Lukeville and spending bulk of my time in Costa Allegra. Should I wait till I get down there before I pick up the stick?
and what is the cost of the stick and data per month?

As a side note that others might find useful. I also have the MF 180 broadband modem. I have found that both ZOOM Model 4506 and ZOOM Model 4501 Wireless N Routers work GREAT with the MF 180.
Model 4501 allows me to keep my Majic Jack Plus connected and on at all times with out having to involve my laptop. It also lets me connect with my I Pod Touch with out having to connect through a USB port on my laptop.

I would wait until I was down there before I got your Telcel Internet stick. They will set it up for you at the same time. Make sure you bring your passport with you as they will need to see it.
I bought mine in Febuary In Puerto Penasco for $399 pesos. That gave me 5 Gigs of data and 2 months to use it.
