We are headed to Plymouth and Cape Cod this summer and I am completely unfamiliar with the area and the route through the most congested areas. We are traveling in a 40' motorhome pulling a toad. Google maps would have me staying on I-95 through NYC and I'm thinking there might be a better way.

What are the recommendations of those familiar with the area?

Which side of VA? The only thing I don't like about I95 is the price. From the west of VA I like I81-I78-I287 and then the Tappan Zee

I've run both ways and K Charles is right...to an extent....The tolls on 95 from Richmond to north of NY City ran me $74 pulling my 5er last Oct. The 287 Tappan Zee route just feels soo long to go around the city and if you're running 95/295 up to NJ you're only gonna save the $26 of crossing the GW.

The thing I have learned about the City is to run it late at night or around noon. Plan your trip wisely!

P.S. You can't do the Baltimore tunnel with LP!

I would run the Tappan Zee any day rather than fight the NYC traffic on and near the GW bridge. You cannot depend on anything - it can be awful any time of day or night. The 287 route may be longer, but most of the time it will be faster.

Through NYC onto the George Washington Bridge you are not on city streets or local roads. You are on a highway that travels through Manhattan and over the bridge. Going through the Bronx to the Connecticut Turnpike you are still on limited access highways. There is going to be traffic no matter which way you go and once on the Connecticut Turnpike expect construction as it is always under construction. In CT you cannot drive on the Merritt Parkway - do not let a standard GPS route you. There are a few roads in CT that do not permit RVs or trucks. In NY any road that says Parkway, you are not permitted on. Avoid rush hour which ends at about 11a and starts again at 3p. Later in the morning is better than earlier in the morning. If you want to avoid most traffic you would have to be driving from about 1 am to 4 am.

I agree avoid the GW bridge. You can get to the Tappan Zee via NJ turnpike to Garden State Parkway if you don't want to use-81.
I'm in MD a few miles north of the OP. I have been GW bridge through NYC. I prefer the Tappan Zee route.

We do MA to FL fairly often. I have been making the trip for 35 years starting as a kid with my parents and this is the most consistenly hassel free route with the quickest time that we have found. I live in central MA. From VA,I take 95N to the NJ turnpike and bail off the turnpike on to 287 (about 70 to 80 miles up the turnpike I think). 287 over the Tappan Zee. Roads are in better shape and generally less traffic. Night time is the best, Sunday mornings aren't bad. Then you can either take 287 to 95 and up. This shorter route but prone to more traffic in CT (New Haven, Bridgeport), RI (Providence) and through the Boston area. The other option more miles, but generally less traffic would be 287 to 684 to 84 to 90 to 495.

If you have the time you should take the inland route, 81, 78, 80, 90, 495 stay away from 95 through NY and CT lots of construction and delays and crazy drivers, Lane shifts and narrow lanes. In all our travels the worst part of any trip is always the New England part in NY and CT on 95, which we live near and have to use to get home. Go anyway but 95. The last time I pulled the trailer over the Tapenzee Bridge is was $22 coming north. But worth it to avoid the GW and the whole 95 mess. good luck and safe travels
