Hi,
Does anyone have a ODB2 scanner that they really like?
I saw this one on sale at Harbor freight, and wondered if it is any good, if anyone is using this brand tool?
OBD2 scanner
It says it will work with any car 1996 and newer, and can be refreshed by plugging into a USB port and download software updates.
If someone has one, can you get engine temperature? What about transmission temperature from the gauge? That might be handy.

For a little more you can get a ScanGaugeII. It will give a lot of data including trans temperature for most vehicles.
You would have to lockup the description of the code on internet. The HF model appears to give that info.

In addition to my Edge CTS, I have an Innova 3140 that I like very well. The price on these has really come down quite a bit recently.

From another forum I read the Scangauge II can be purchased HERE for $134.95. Just join the forum, then scroll down the page to find the offer for $134.95.

I have that model, I actually got it for a bit less (better sale plus 20% off coupon)
I'd buy it again
It does not support the VW/Audi propriety add-on codes, nor will it reset anyones "oil change" code. But it works for what it says it will do.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

Depends what you want to do with the unit and how much you will use. I have one which connects to a laptop by USB and displays onto the laptop screen. It is not as compact as the hand held units but a lot less costly and easier to read the data. I have had mixed results with the Bluetooth models having set some up for friends and failing in several cases.
The limitation on the data which will be displayed lies largely with the vehicle's data output as the scanner can only display what the vehicle outputs to the OBD2 port.
FWIW, not all post 1996 vehicles will connect to OBD2 scanners as some got by the cut-off. If memory serves a few Ford Windstars....can't recall the few others...
Diesels are a spotty coverage so one may wish to check before buying. Some won't display while others display only limited information. Most of the lower cost (all which I have seen) will not display body computer information which may or may not be of interest.

While looking for something that would let me watch the engine/transmission temp I came across an ad for the Garmin Ecoroute HD unit.
This plugs into your OBD2 port and uses blue tooth to connect to your Garmin (mine is the 1390LMT)
Works well and has several screens that can be displayed. The largest one will display as guages up to 5 of 20 readings. The ones I am using are RPM, Voltage, engine load, engine temp and vacuum.
I have found that while using these while towing I have upped my mileage about 2 mpg by not overloading or lugging the engine.
Lots of options out there.

you can also get a bluetooth obd2 adapter for about $25/35 shipped and be able to use it with your laptop or smart phone, and unlike a scangauge, it will not be limited to use in only one vehicle...
