Still undecided whether to go California Route 1 or 101 after we leave Hearst Castle heading north in our 36ft Class A with Porsche toad. After you leave San Simeon heading north on route 1 is there any decent road to get off it and head east to reconnect to 101 or are you stuck on it all 103 miles to Monteray? Any services, RV camps etc en route?

Nope, no roads cut back over that you can do in a motorhome. There is I think a road on the map but I've never seen it. If it exists I think it's dirt. So once you start North on 1 you'll have to either go all the way or turn around and come back.

Taking the route just depends on how comfortable you are driving. I have actually never done in my Motorhome going North. I always do it going South and then I come back home on 101. But Northbound is easier than southbound because you're further from the cliffs. It's just more difficult to pull over and see the sites while going north.

I assume you're on a computer, go to Google maps and select satelite view and you can get a pretty good idea of what the road is like. It's actually very good up to Big Sur and it's even good there but it gets more twisty there. I wouldn't hesitate to take it if it were me.

Hwy 46, just south of Hearst Castle, will take you back to 101.

There are turn outs on the twisty part. It's a beautiful drive - but you will be working harder than freeway driving.

I didn't see the part of your question on services and RV parks. Yes there are, but they are few and far between. You can get fuel in Big Sur and I think there's another place in there someplace, but I'd start with a full tank if I were you and not worry about trying to fit into a fuel station. There are small restuarants and shops along the way, but remember this area is fairly remote. Once you get to Big Sur there are a lot more businesses along the route.

Also before you head out make sure to check the Caltrans Webpage. There is a storm coming tomorrow and sometimes the road closes do to a land slide. For that matter check the weather too. If you're planning on going tomorrow then I wouldn't do it, not in the RV. Only go if the weather is going to be clear. If you do get stuck behind a landslide you may have a real hard time getting turned around.

The question was about roads North of San Simeon. The answer to that is no, not that a motorhome can use. If the OP has to turn around then it's all the way back to 46.

I think I can safely predict that the weather will be great in two weeks. However, we seemed to have got our Spring during the winter and the winter didn't start until spring. But usually by May the weather will be great along the coast.

The current forecast for Big Sur is showing ran tomorrow (Wed) and maybe into Thursday, then clear sailing and sunshine after that.

The first response answered the question regarding going north. My response was "what next?"
