Our vet wants our dog on trifexxis and we are getting ready to start it. I didn't realize it doesn't protect against ticks (and it doesnt, I just checked). Is there anything out there that protects against just ticks that I can use in addition to the trifexxis for at least the 3 doses we have? I don't want to double dose on the flea protection in fear of doing some sort of damage from the chemicals to my dog. My other option is to stay on the current flea/tick and heart worm meds and just use up the trifexxis doses in the winter when ticks aren't a big threat.

I have this months Trifexxis, and then I think I will rethink this and talk to my vet. I haven't heard of anyone having tick problems in my area, or at the CG's we normally visit, but I want Hans protected just in case. Too many decisions...haha

Certifect is what I am using instead of Frontline. Vet said this was something new and much better than Frontline.

We use Interceptor and Frontline.
I used to have several seizure dogs. I read an article that said these were the preferred choices for seizure dogs. Heartgard and Advantage lower the seizure threshold.
I keep my dogs on Interceptor year round. They only get frontlined if I see a flea or if we are traveling to a place where fleas and ticks are a big issue.
I did cocker rescue for many years, and occasionally I'd bring fleas home. I was very careful, but still about 3 times over 10 years, my personal dogs got a flea.
I had 13 cockers - all but 2 are now waiting at the Bridge. They all lived between 13 or 14 and up as high as 16 yrs and 7 months.
With the life spans I got out of my dogs using these products, I am sticking with them. I'm never eager to jump on the bandwagon when something new comes out. I want to see more info before I'll buy into it.
I'm of the mind, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Trifexis can be coupled with a Preventix collar. Collar last 3 months. Another good inexpensive combination is Iverhart plus and Scalibor collar. The Scalibor collar is fantastic product - last 6 months. Not for households with dogs and cats that groom each other or sleep together.

What about children petting dogs wearing these collars?

We use Sentinel which kills the eggs but not the adult fleas and ticks and I have Capstar just in case he gets fleas or ticks and this will kill the adult fleas and ticks. Heart worm medication is included in Sentinel.

I worry about that too. I have a 5 yr old that loves to hug and kiss on my dog. I don't want her handling one of those collars.

It is better for killing the ticks, not necessarily better than Frontline as a product. Certifect has an ingredient called amitraz which essentially gives the ticks "hot feet" so they move faster on the dog. This faster movement allows them to pick up the fipronil (Frontline) which actually kills them. Went camping for a week and put this on my dog before going and did not see one imbedded tick the entire trip.
