Well it's been 5 years so time to renew our SD drivers licenses.
We're in Rapid City so we head out this morning to run a couple of errands and then go to the DMV.

Walked in at 10:15 am and both of us were out the door done by 10:45.

Simple......
Birth certificate(s)
SS Cards
Campground receipt
Signed a 'Residency Affidavit'
Eye Tests
Pictures
Paid our monies ($20/each)
New license

Couldn't have been any easier.

Mine took 2 trips. When I got my SS card back in the early 60's, it came in 2 parts, stapled to a brochure thing. Both lower & upper parts had the number machine-stamped into the card. As instructed, I removed the bottom part and signed it. When I went to get my license last year, I took the top part still stapled to the original brochure that came from the ss office but this wasn't acceptable ! Went home and re-grouped and all was ok the second trip. My new license has a gold star on it so next time I only need to show 2 pieces of mail with name/address on it. Unless they change the rules, of course !!!!

Is all of that necessary because you are fulltimers? In Arkansas, for renewal, all we need to do is turn in our old license, take eye test, sign a card, get a mug shot, pay our dues and its out the door. No need for birth certificates or SS card.

Won't a passport substitute for the SS card and birth certificate? Seems we used that the last time we renewed.

Has nothing to do with being FT.
How long has it been since you had to renew?

Fed ID Act (Real ID Act)
The Real ID Act of 2005 passed as part of an emergency military spending and tsunami relief bill. The act is aimed at "improved security for driver's licenses and personal identification cards."

How do I get one?

Complying states' department of motor vehicle offices will require you to show up before May 10, 2013, and provide a photo ID, birth certificate, proof of Social Security account and proof of residence.

What if I live in a noncompliant state?

No federal agency will accept your state-issued driver's license as a valid form of ID. You will need to use a passport at federal buildings and parks, and for domestic air travel.

The ACT was passed back in 2005 but states had until 2008 to implement. Some states got extensions until 2010.
Not sure if Arkansas is a non-compliant state. Might what to check before you go to renew. As a US citizen you need to 'prove' it.

Passport can be used as one form of ID vs birth certificate but another form of ID is required to prove SS Account..
Social Security card
W-2 Form
SSA 1099 Form
Non-SSA 1099 Form
Pay stub (must include name and social security number)
Then of course you have to have two items to prove residency.

Utility bill/phone bill/mortgage statement/rent receipt etc.

We used a campground receipt as 'rent' and then signed the 'Residency Affidavit'

The above info. pertains to SD........other states may have different requirements.

It was not a hassle just a bit ironic having to prove you are a US Citizen.....

In NY for renewal all you need to do is take the vision test fill out the form and hand over the money.
If applying for a Learners Permit you must supply proof of ID.
For an enhanced license you must have SS card birth certificate, etc.
Enhanced serves the same purpose as a passport for travel into Canada or Mexico.

Here in SC if your over 70 you have to go in in person to proove that your still breathing. Eye test, present license, pay the lady, wait for the guy to finish hid doughnut so he can take your picture and you're finished. OH, sorry, I shouldn't used the word "Finished" around OLD people. Now only good for 5 years instead of 10, just to make sure you don'y over pay in case 10 years is too long. Ha Ha.
