and who's gonna get it off the roof when it's needed? don't bet on the service tech. and who's gonna get it *up* there in the first place? any room under the rear of the chassis? that's where our spare is on on gas coach.

Mounted or unmounted? I am thinking about this too, but since I don't have a lot of spare room in my cargo bay, I am looking for other options. I don't think the roof is a good solution either.

Putting it on the roof is not really the best place to put your tire. You're going to expose it more to the sun and the heat which can cause your spare tire to deteriorate faster. The heat can also cause it to deflate faster and nothing is more frustrating than to get your spare tire out only to find that it's deflated or flat as well. I'd suggest to try putting it in the rear area of your motorhome.

Have You tried to squeeze the Tire into an oval using a Ratchet strap? This might allow it to be shoved through the cargo door!

Some are storing them in the Towed if there is room in the trunk or rear hatch area.

The subject of carrying a spare on a D/P comes up every once in a while and there's always a few ideas. Some don't carry one at all and rely on E/S systems to do the hunt for a spare if and when one is needed. Some carry just the tire and, just where they do it, there's been all kinds of places. Some compartments are large enough to accept the tire and they carry them there. Some carry it in the toad, some might try carrying it on the roof. Some of these guys even change their own tire, now that's some serious work, out in the outback.

I know of a couple of boys here on this site that have fabricated brackets/cradles for the receiver hitch. It's a simple bracket to build and will hold a spare tire (without wheel) easily. And, it's not all that hard to get it into and out of the cradle. All that's needed after the tire's in the cradle is a nice full cover for it. Of course a heat shield might be needed to keep the radiator heat off the cover of the tire. But, that's no big deal either. In any case, it's pretty good remedy for carrying at least a tire and then you can still use your E/S for changing it and they don't have to go on the hunt for one, in the middle of a holiday weekend, in the middle of nowhere.

A lot depends on the size of the tire. If you have the 22.5" tire they will take up a lot more space than just a 19.5" one. I carry an unmounted tire in one compartment. When I bought new tires a couple years ago the dealer saved the best one for a spare.

I'm having a bracket made to go under the rear of the mh, attached to the two frame rails. I used cargo straps to secure my unmounted spare in that location when we went to Newfoundland last Sept. That worked great as a temp fix, but a an hour with a welding machine and some scrap bedframe metal (a fabricator's best friend ) will get a nice bracket mounted in the same location.
