My wife and I are in our early 50s with 2 grown children and a newly adopted 8 year old. We have purchased some property with the intent to build a new home in a few years. We are considering selling all of our current assets, and living in our rv full time for a couple of years on the property. In addition traveling in the rv on every occasion that we can.

We've coined the phrase 10by32 if it will not fit in the 10 by 32 then we don't need it.

Anyone else ever tried this? Are we crazy?

Many many years ago, I lived in an 8 x 35 trailer (yeah, trailer trash) while putting my husband thru school. My neighbors lived in same size trailer and raised their granddaughter -- they lived in it for many many years...she moved in with them when she was 2 and graduated from high school while still living in that trailer. Those trailers weren't nearly as compact and set up as good as the new RVs. I'd say it CAN be done, it HAS been done.

I'm sure lots of folks have done that. But if you're in NC I would guess that you won't be moving the RV much after you put the skirting on. Skirting will be vital in the wintertime to keep heat in, keep pipes from freezing, lowering your propane/electric bill. Good luck.

I wouldn't dream of it, but that doesn't mean it won't work for you.

Sure it's been done by many folks.

This property that you plan on building house.......can an RV be placed on it and lived in?
Some places have zoning issues/restrictions/covenants etc. so make sure those don't prohibit using an RV as a temporary home.

No zoning problems etc.....then you will need power source/water source/waste dumping just for starters.

Good luck!

My fiance and I are on the start of our second year of fulltiming in the 5er while we remodel a house. It gives a different perspective of what you 'need' to live. I have my boys 11 days out of the month and that is the only time that I feel things get 'small' but that might be because they are not there the other times. They are 12 and 9 and need space to move around. It is not bad when the weather is nice but otherwise....

Thanks for all the feedback. Land is not restricted so we are OK there. Access to power, water and sewer already in place. Still thinking through the process but appreciate the points of consideration each of you raised. We will see what happens.

Well we did it, or almost. RV site is completed with full hook up, storage building delivered to property which will accommodate storage and my temporary office. Power, water and sewer run from son's house which is also on the property. I'm loving the cost of that = 0.00.

RV cover to be installed on 9/21. Slight modifications made to unit to give more storage space. Been in for about 3 weeks so far so good.

Founder renters for the house who wanted to rent a furnished place so we took our personal and essential stuff and left the rest for.

Yes I do believe we are probably crazy but what a story we will have to tell our grandchildren. I'll keep you posted.

Fulltiming it can be tough if you have nothing you know you can go back to. If you have an end goal in mind and spend the time traveling/enjoying the freedom it can be a life changing experience. If you do do it, don't blow all your money because when those few years are up you may want a more stable living situation once more.
