Has anybody had the fatal tic tic of a valve lifter going south because of the lack of zinc in dino oil?

Most cams are roller now days and you don't have to worry about chewed up cams and lifters.

Haven't experienced it personally, but have read about it in Hot Rod & Car Craft.
I've used Z-Max with success on some engines to add a little more Zinc to the crankcase. Won't use it in my Cummins, though; might mess up my paticulate matter convertors or diesel cat cons. Besides, I've had good luck with Amsoil.

if the lifter ticks first thing in the morning then gets quiet, your o.k. it's just oil leak down.
if it ticks all the time, it can be one of the following:
a) the mechanical parts within the lifter are stuck/collapsed, it needs replaced... i would change them all...
b) the cam, lifter rollers, valve train has excessive slop and the valves need adjusted. this may be done with a adjustment of a nut/bolt, shaft, and/or spacer replacement.
sometimes just using a thicker grade of oil will take up the slack..

Is it possible the valve "tic" is from inadequate lubrication due to clogged oil passages to the top end of the engine??

Try adding some Motorkote to your oil. Now avail at Wal-Mart. Web site is www.motorkote.com

From what I understand, the ZDDP is most important during the breakin period. If your engine is already broken in, it is unlikely that you will miss it.

Yes, I had the cam go flat in my 73 454 pickup and have the rebuilt engine ready to go back in, yes, it will use oil made for the flat tappet engines. It was a costly mistake to use modern oils. I figured out the cause after I got the engine back or I would have looked into changing to roller lifters.
