PirateLand is our Favorite South Myrtle Beach CG. Only IF you are on the beach. The sites are huge on the beach, but rather small back in the woods.
I would have to say Ocean Lakes is our next to last MB CG choice. and We have stayed at all of them. Even some that are nolonger there. We were at OL last July, and to be honest. It was terrible, after staying at Pirateland, MBTP, and LW. Security is nonexistent, and the golf carts run wild. A boy was actually stabbed to death over a Golf Cart incident the week after we left. We had a oceanfront site, (They are TINY) and people kept asking if they could park their cart on our site while they went out on the beach. Came back once, and one was there.
This year, We are back at Pirateland the end of July, Oceanfront again. Oceanfront rocks!
We will only go back to OL if we can't get in anywhere else. We would even take Apache first.

Ocean Lakes gives site information in detail on their website. What site number did you have that has caused you so much heartache? I am a seasoned MB camper as well and I disagree with your assessment of OL. The sites at Pirateland are back in and if your are lucky you can get a 40 'x 40' site. Keep in mind that the bumper of your camper will be within a few feet (or less) of your neighbors bumper because he is backed in right behind you. There are a handful of pull through sites at Pirateland, however I didn't care for them because they aren't wide enough for my taste.
I guess I'm getting old and slow. I have stayed at OL,Lakewood and Pirateland and enjoyed all 3.
However,at this point I prefer less excitement, and action and more relaxation.
I now prefer N. Myrtle because it is a bit slower paced. I can seek out action when I want it, But I can also return to relative peace and quiet at the camp site.
I don't think there is much peace and quiet to be found at any of the big 3 during peak season.

Todd
Was on the front row. Either 2178, or 2193. Was paved. Didn't really care for that either. And it was NOT our first trip to OL. We only went to be with friends this time. Every time we were there. The site was tiny, and we had to park the TV across the end of the TT. Site was not long enough to get the 27' TT on, and not block the road with the truck, and the first couple times, we were in a pup. But we could have lived with that. It was the utter lack of security that really bothered us. not to mention, the cart mentality, of I'll do as I please, and leave it where I want.
As for the PL sites. Yep I know, We have been there a few times. A much more family friendly CG, with much greater security, and beach, sites deep enough to leave the TV, and TT hooked up, and not have either in the road. Also wide enough to park 2, visitor's cars plus the TV, with out getting on neighbors site.
Truthfull, all OL has going for it, is the easy access, and really nice Bath houses. Because I found out, I can also pick my site at PL as well.
BTW. Not that impressed with the pull thrus, and the site behind us was pretty small as well. The were so close. I felt like I was going to dinner with them, every time I went back to dump the tanks.
We visit Myrtle Beach multiple times per year. Have checked out every campground in the area, including some that are no longer existing.
Ocean Lakes is the only place we will stay! We stayed once at Lakewood, but never again. Half the sites are back in with your door away from the ocean. No pull throughs like Ocean Lakes has.
Also OLFC is the only campground where you can reserve a specific site. If they don't have a site available that we want, we stay home.
We don't go to MB during July, June, or August. Too crowded, traffic too bad, etc. We also avoid Bike Week.

Not so. I know exactly what site I have at Pirateland this summer. You simply have to read their reservation policy to know how to reserve a specific site.
Really backing in is not a problem for me. I perfer it, as I can put the TT where I want it better backing than I can on the little pull thrus. I do make sure my TT faces the ocean though.
The sites at OL are all pull through as mentioned before. The sites vary in size. Some are bigger than others. Many are paved (and I can't believe someone would not prefer a level paved pad over some dirt). The security is there doing their job, but you have to remember that OL sees 25000-35000 daily during the busy season. We were there at spring break and it was full. Everyone acted civilized for the most part. No terrible eratic behavior.
You can grab a fishing charter at Murrells Inlet, south of OL.

From Piratelands website:
We will guarantee one of two specific site numbers if:
A. The requested site is available and the reservation is 7 nights or more,
B. The reservation is paid in full at the time of booking, AND
C. You must specify when making the reservation that you would like to guarantee a site number. A reservation for 7 nights that has been paid does NOT automatically guarantee a site number; it must be mentioned during the initial reservation process.
So they do not guarantee a specific site number. Only one of two. You have to pay up front for 7 nights. And you have to mention it during the reservation policy.
OL, is much easier. Done online. Tells you the specifics for each site avaialable. 4 night minimum between Jun 15-Aug 15 (shortest of the big 3). And you are only charged about half up front for the reservation.
There's a reason OL is the most popular. Just keep your cooler secure at night...lol
