The sites at OL are all pull through as mentioned before. The sites vary in size. Some are bigger than others. Many are paved (and I can't believe someone would not prefer a level paved pad over some dirt). The security is there doing their job, but you have to remember that OL sees 25000-35000 daily during the busy season. We were there at spring break and it was full. Everyone acted civilized for the most part. No terrible eratic behavior.

You can grab a fishing charter at Murrells Inlet, south of OL.

The reason I like the sandy sites better. First. They are cooler. Cement is hot, and retains heat most of the night. second. the babies like to play in the sand. With a sandy site, all they have to do is walk outside. Third. their security su.ks, all they do is ride around in their Crown Vics with the windows up. And last summer, they let it get so out of control, a boy was murdered, because of a drunk golf cart driver. Their bath houses are very nice though.

Have to say if you read the reviews on line PL is not rated has high as CL. Most of the people are saying just the opposite of what you are say Terry. But anytime you have this meany campers in one place you will not be able to please everyone.

I wish we had decided to do this earlier and we would have stayed at the State Park. They don't play there and a buddy at work said the sites are huge and very very quiet.

We will see and report back after the trip.

Terryallan, do you honestly think that security anywhere can stop what happened? It was a matter of circumstance of where it happened. Look at the numbers. 25000-35000 people a day there. When has anything like this ever happened before? I think those numbers are pretty good.

All I can say. Is after stayng in all the MB CGs. The only one with worse security, would be Apache, and I've been told their's is better now. But it's all in what you want. I want a quieter more family friendly CG like Pirateland, or MBTP. Other's want the hectic more busy CG like OL. I have friends that go there every year. The reason they give, is, they are allowed to bring their own Golf Carts. No other CG allows that. For us it dosen't mean any thing, as we only take bikes, and don't rent a cart.
Often it just comes down to which CG you can get into when making reservations.

I went back and read the reviews of pirate land as the op mentioned. From those reviews it sounds like golf carts are an equal problem there mentioned by several people. I imagine it is not the same magnitude as OL.

And Lakewood does allow personal golf carts. You just have to keep them stored there. It won't be long and I imagine they will ease up on that as well. This is the first year we have stayed at OL. Normally we did Lakewood because it was easier to get into without having to make reservations well in advance.

Honestly if someone doesn't wanna deal with golf carts then should probably try the state park or a lesser popular park.

Or go where security has better comtrol. I rather enjoy the nightly golf cart parade at PL. They are kept well undercontrol. security stops the parade if, and when a RV has to come out on Ocean Drive, and allows the RV to get to their site with no problems. Carts are required to be parked at 11:00 PM. 11:05. there is not one in sight. At OL it's more of a suggestion. BTW. MBTP dosen't allow carts for any but the perminate renters.

Agree on the time frame for res. We made our res in Jan, and still didn't get the site we wanted. Wanted oceanfront on the North end of the CG. Had to settle for oceanfront on the South end near Lakewood.

From what we witnessed during spring break was that there were several secuirty guards on Ocean Blvd monitoring the traffic. I have a video on my phone that I need to upload to youtube that shows a security guard having a cart pulled over. We saw that happen nightly. We witnessed them stop traffic many times to let vehicles in and out as well. Around 11pm, carts were pretty much retired for the night.

If you Google Myrtle Beach campgrounds and read the ratings you will find that Pirate Land is not rated very well and for all the reasons that you state you found a Ocean Lakes. Lack or no security, carts running all over the place and unruly kids drinking and doing things on the beach.

That took them off our short list but as with any reviews on line you need to take them with a grin of salt. That is why I posted here looking for people that have camped at the campgrounds.

To be perfectly honest I'm not a fan of large campgrounds with a lot of people let alone thousands but with what friends told us about Ocean Lakes and the great times they have every time they go down the DW wanted to go there or some place like it.

Myself a nice small State Park or Campground with large sites ,clean beach and tress is my idea of an ideal campground.

I have camped at them all and for me its OL's or I will not go to MB. The others are out dated and the sites are to small. I hate backin sites and sites that dont face the ocean. Argue all you want there is no substitution for OL's. I have recomended it to lots of people over the years and they have all made it their primary CG in MB. It is constantly voted #1 for a reason and thats because the majority of campers prefer it. If you dont like it simply do go.This website is the only place I have ever heard of people that dont like OL's makes you wonder if some people just like to find a reason to complain.Everybody likes different things but the majority of RVers like OL's or it would not stay booked.
