Thanks for the response. I was a bit down last night after a few comments from near by campers and feeling a bit guilty. But you all are right I am gratefully to have made it out of Viet Nam alive, survived a heart attack, had a great job and have a great retirement/medical plan. Thanks for lifting me up this morning. Gotta fire this bad boy up we are at Bryce headed to Capital Reef over Hwy 12. Thanks again ....Larry

Cheers Larry! We're also "lucky" in that we both worked and now have a retirement pension. Life is good!

If all goes as planned I will retire at 63 and have 37 years of service with my employer which required me at times to work long hours across all shifts while I contributed to a pension and 401k plan. Where does luck enter in to that equation? I will not feel guilty but I will be grateful to my employer for taking a chance on me and to this great nation that allows those of us with the motivation to prosper for the unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I just don't understand how someone telling you that you're "lucky" makes you feel guilty. Guilt implies that you have done something wrong. If you have done nothing wrong, then feel no guilt and enjoy what you have. Just because someone else doesn't see the hard work you put into getting you where you are doesn't mean you are in any way, shape or form wrong. To hell with them, since it's jealousy speaking.

Good question. We retired at 58 and do a lot of traveling in our small, aging 5th wheel. I have a "guaranteed" teacher pension and a little soc. sec. So we can afford modest travel and RVing. We have some still working friends that are obviously angry and jealous of our situation and don't feel they will ever be able to retire. I'm sorry for this type of attitude and it leads to nothing positive. We can always find unlimited numbers of folks who are worse or better off than we are.

Just to add- It really doesn't matte if you are "lucky" or planned it does it? It is what it is.

LUCK is a great word…

Lucky is a correct term and response when it is offered… we are all lucky and luck has had much to do with our success whether it is admitted or not…

You can’t say they can’t or wouldn’t do what you have done and is why you have come out better off… that would be a little uppity…

Many of them have worked hard and long also and the possibility is even if they can‘t go RV‘ing that they are no worse off and richer in other ways…

You can’t even say you made better choices and that is why you are better off…

They may have made the best choices possible that were available to them in their time and place… the result of making those good decisions are related to which opportunities that are presented…

You can’t even say you were smarter and is why you have more…
Plenty of smart people have not done as well as some that are not so smart…

Its life and life has no hard and fast rules that fit everyone the same…

Sure there are some that worked hard and took advantage of what life offered and done well… yet others that work just as hard took advantage of what life offered had very different results… maybe its only because life’s offerings were different… maybe the dividends were in blessings without a cash value…

While it might feel good to say I worked hard and long to get what I have and I am proud of it…
You should be proud of your life and accomplishments and what you put into it…

But I assure you there are as many people that worked very hard and very long to get what they have but don’t gage their success with a cash value…

they to should be proud of their accomplishments and the input they made,
their rewards may be many, but don‘t involve a bank account…

Being lucky is a part of everyone’s life and success, because no one truly makes it totally on their own…

If someone say you are lucky its because you are, we all are lucky in our own ways…

No matter where you are in your life all you have to do is to look around you to realize how lucky you really are…

There are good people that have been dealt bad cards that work harder and longer than most to seemingly just stay afloat… even they can feel lucky just by looking around…

If there is ever a time you don’t or can’t feel lucky, just go to a children’s hospital sometime and volunteer a few hours of your time…

Now if I could only get lucky with the lottery…

We are mid-50ish Fulltimers after years of hard work and lots of saving. We chuckle at the, "Did you win the lottery?" type questions.

My favorite was, "Do y'all have a trust fund?"

It's all good. It gives us a chance to explain we worked for the same company for 36 years each and started saving for retirement since we were teenagers. The harder you work the luckier you get!

My answer to that was "Yeah, the harder I worked, the luckier I got!"
