There are several quite LARGE Campgrounds accessed from the trace but our favorite in the area is Hurricane Creek located on the east side of Lake Barkley. Much less like camping in a mid sized town . LBL is a great place if you enjoy wildlife viewing and historic places.

Stayed there two years ago. Greeat people and a nice base camp to do some sight seeing. There is also a state park to the south of there but I can remember the name. No matter which you choose hit the lodge at the state park for there all you can eat dinner. You wont be sorry!

If you choose this campground, please be aware that the US Route 68 bridge across Lake Barkley is CLOSED until at least Memorial Day.
It was hit by a barge in February or March, I don't remember which, and repairs are proceeding 24/7, but it is far from done.
This means you have to over 20 miles north and west to acess LBL from the north at Grand Rivers, or about 25 miles south to cross Lake Barkley at Dover on US 79, and then a few more miles west to get into LBL at the south end.
On the plus side, you would probably have the campground to yourself.

There are several nice cgs: COEs: Eureka (our favorite and the smallest),Canal, Hurricane Creek. NFS: Hillman's Ferry (largest). Plus a few private ones. Each has disadvantages/advantages. The north end ones are easily accessible - as stated Hwy 68 is out for the foreseeable future. If you like, you can PM me and I can help with the above mentioned cgs.
We have stayed at canal in Grand Rivers. Most sites have water and electric,a few have full hookups. Some are right on the water where you can watch the barge traffic.
The first time we stayed there Hillmans ferry did not reserve so we reserved Energy lake a few miles from there and moved Sunday. No problem getting a spot on Sunday.Hillmans ferry had a few reserved the last time we were there. Lots to do and see in the area . Museum, outdoor zoo, planetarium, Buffalo, fenced in drive through nature area. Not sure you could do it all in 2 days.
