Depends on when you're going and which route you want to take. We went from Ca to SD via the southern route but took hardly any interstates. We did NM, Texas, Okla, Neb, Mo, then up to SD. We stayed at Rafter J and I would recommend it. Custer is also a nice park but IMHO too far from all there is to see and do in the Rapid City area. Be sure you avoid the area in early August unless you're into motorcycles....google Sturgis Week....not only lots of MCs but the prices of everything increases, food and CG fees....if you're going that way, let me know, I have almost 1 terabyte of pictures from that trip......Dennis

Recommend you obtain a campground directory (Trailer life, Woodalls, etc.) and plot out your possible sites / RV parks.

If you are anywhere near the Canadian border be aware that July 1 is Canada Day and July 4 is our Independence Day so CGs will be full that week.

There are quite a few options in the Mt Rushmore area, but you need to make reservations now!! Custer State Park is a great camping option, e only. We enjoy Game Lodge, big rig friendly - there is a dump station, and good bath/showers. Rafter J is a favorite, pricey, but lots of amentities. We have reservations for July in Custer at Broken Arrow.

We liked Mt Rushmore/Hill City KOA. They have a bus to take you to Mt Rushmore from the campground.
