2002 Ford 7.3 diesel F250/4x4/Auto/108K
Logged 1,500 miles in past two weeks. Twice, Check Engine light has illuminated immed after fueling. First time, got down the road into rest area, secured fuel cap, took 20 min break, restarted, NO LIGHT.
Been 700 mi. since, ran fine today first 100 mi. Topped off fuel, BINGO--light came on again, but never could get it to extinguish.
Ran absolutely fine, all aspects. Tracked fuel economy, spot on, even through some challenging terrain.
Strangely, prior owner told me the Exhaust Brake would trigger it periodically, if he left it on below 30mph. I was running exhaust brake, but did turn it off each time before thresh hold. He said it typically went off by itself 30-40 miles down the road. I do not know make of E.B.
Does Auto Zone scan these 02's 7.3s, or is it proprietary to Ford?
ALL HELP, AS USUAL, IS APPRECIATED as this dude despises stealerships.
Auto parts store scanner will NOT be able to pull codes on the 7.3L Diesel

government mandates say that the codes can be pulled on global obd if they are for emmision reasons. the sales clerk at parts store can pull them but be ware of their advise as they usually only know how to read the scanner and tell you what they are supposed to in order to get you to throw parts at it. post the codes and i will see what we can do. one word of caution if it has a programer to go with the brake it may be tough to read.

I had a 7.3 and added a Banks exhaust brake and I would get a check engine light, I had an automatic tranny and what was happening was that when the tranny was supposed to come out of lockup but did not due to the banks system keeping it locked up the computer in the truck would sense that the tranny was not unlocking. Banks had to send a electronic module that would trick the trucks computer to think it unlocked, hence no more light.
Not just any scanner will pull the codes. And the ones that will are not inexpensive. I do believe that you need to have the codes pulled since you don't notice any change in the truck otherwise. Of course a Ford dealer could do it, or find a independent diesel tech. Often the teches in the Ford shops do work on the side. Often a great deal.
Without any real symptoms I can only suggest the following:
is the fuel filter in need of changing (easy)
drain the fuel bowl - eliminate and water in fuel issues
The link to the 7.3 forum at ford-trucks.com is a invaluable resource. Use it. There are too many possibles - wiring, pressures (oil/fuel), injectors, fuel pump, various sensors and on and on. Get the codes and narrow it way down.
