Going to look at a 2001 Ford Excursion 4 wheel drive with a v-10.... it has 183,000 on it. What to look for?

It's a Ford, look for rust and an exhaust leak.

There will be many posts to ya thread!

On this Forum there many posts mentioning....spark plugs becoming unseated....due to inadequate threads in the alloy engine version of the V10s.

Make sure the V-10 is there or you'll not enjoy towing with it .

Check for loose BJ`s and worn hub bearings. ask about the spark plugs and if they have ever been done or became loose (blown out) of the cylinder head. check the trans fluid. the trans has a tendency to fail early if not maintained. also the caliper slides are known for sticking (pulling during braking). otherwise just normal maintanance and wear and tear items.

Good luck!

Check front end...ball joints, tie rods. Trans fluid. Engine oil/coolant.

I bought mine January '11 with 161k miles and have put plugs/coils, shocks, drag link, trans flush, one belt idler pulley, and brakes on mine. It now has 184k. Engine and trans are strong, no leaks, but my front end is very loose and due for all new ball joints. While I'm there I'll do axle u-joints.

Look for all the same things you would on any 11 year old vehicle with 180,000 miles on it. If you can get the service records it will be easier.

Look for the axle code on the door jam sticker.

C1 is 3.73 LS
C3 is 4.30 LS

Can't remember what the other codes were for non LS.

If you're gonna tow, look for 4.30 gears.

As others have said there are mutiple posts about Excursion towing. Let me give you cliff notes.

V10 motor is a very reliable, powerful, and thirsty engine. Early years have had spark plug blow out problems if a spark plug change is not done right. Transmissions kinda blows compared to newer transmissions.

The Excursion is a great vehicle but had one fatal flaw.

Who Ford targeted it to be the primary driver. They tried to make a truck not ride like a truck and put way to soft of springs on it. After 80,000 -100,000 the springs are toast and will need to be replaced. The Excursion will ride better and tow amazing after a few modifications.

Plenty of info out there how to do it all. I just finished mine and I love it. Tows, rides, pulls great. Its an amazing vehicle.

Let us know if you need any assistance in a p.m. and we can steer you in the right way. Nothing better than seeing another loaded Excursion doing what it should be doing (Pulling a huge camping trailer with a large family inside)

I had bought an Ex that was neglected with 80K miles with an extended warranty and had to get work done on the 4x4 system including cracked vacuum line, actuator, stuck u joint and both front hubs replaced plus the usual maintenance of full tune up, brake pads and rotors (corroded), and most fluids flushed. Once it was refreshed it was a stable, reliable tow vehicle that never let me down.
