DrJen, rental cars are a good option only if you are in a larger city/town. When we were renting before purchase, we ran into a couple of situations where there were no rental car agencies available.

Personally, if you can manage a large motorhome, I would think you can manage a small toad. They are very easy to hook-up.... only takes about 5 minutes. I have a bad back and try not to lift anything too heavy.... the toad hook-up is not a problem for me. Your situation may be different but you didn't really explain your limitations.

If you are going to grill outside, put up lawn chairs, lower your manual window awnings, a toad should be a breeze.

Hope it all works out for you folks.

MM.

I agree with calling ahead if you are relying on a car. Funny, I never thought about renting a car while camping but it's a good idea. Our MDX is not towable and hate giving it up to get a toad. Renting is a good option for now. Also we have an RVing with disabilities forum, just search up to the right ^ lots of good feedback in there too. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

My first experience with Enterprise cured me of renting. First they had no one to bring the car to me. I got dropped off at the office and was then stranded because they had no car available. I had to make a lot of calls to get back to the MH. This was in Suburban Atlanta so not in the sticks. I never gave a second try after that one.

Must have been ages ago, Enterprise no longer brings the car to you...they pick you up and take you to their office for you to pick up the vehicle.

We have never had an issue with getting a car from Enterprise and have all the cash that we did not spend on the tow vehicle and towing setup to spend on diesel and CG fees.

After 3 + years of owning our Class A, I can tell you that we never had any inconvenience from not towing. Many here will tell you that they would not consider not towing but you will be many dollars ahead by using Enterprise.

BTW, Enterprise is not open on Sundays...so you have to work around that!

I used Thrifty in North Myrtle Beach last September. We were touring around without our toad but decided to extend our stay by a week. Great pick-up and delivery service from Thrifty and very competitive pricing.

I've not seen a campground offer rental cars. Rental agencies are your best bet but aware that you may not find major companies in all areas of the country, especially in or near very small or rural towns. We have been to a major tourist town and found they had no rental car agency so do your research ahead of time.

I have..at a KOA. No other rental services around. The place charged $59.95 a day for a Cavalier and $225.oo a day for a Suburban,...

Thats only your experiences and not the "norm". The wife and I went our first 3 years "toadless" and once we had to buy a new car...we got one that could be towed "4 down". FARRRRRR too many CG's at locations that have no cars for rent.

Just be aware thatm, if you travel to a popular destination during a busy time, there might not be a car available for you when you call. Last trip to Florida, I made reservations months ahead of time for cars from Enterprise for every stop. Long story short, regardless of the fact that I had a reservation, I spent the first 2 days of my 4 days in Orlando without a car. Groceries was quite a long walk from the Davenport KOA.

I WILL NOT rely on that again and bought the setup to tow the HHR with me wherever I go.

that and you're camping/traveling options are limited to wherever there is an enterprise franchise.

We can all find something wrong with just about anything, but if you do not feel comfortable towing or simply choose not to do so, rental can be made to work. Enterprise, by far, has the largest network of agencies off airport. With a little advance planning you should be able to find a rental. I would never call the agency - reserve on line - there is no charge, no credit card info given, and they will have to work at getting a car for you. The longest I have ever had to wait was about 20 minutes. If you do run into trouble call customer service and report it. There is a lot of competition in the rental business.
Anyhow, just MHO.
