Just to secure it you could do that, but if you want UV protection too . . . The thing is you don't need a really wide strip to do this. I normally buy the 4" wide tape but have been known to cut it in half.
I used 2" wide Eternabond for the WHOLE thing. I camp where it's not uncommon to scrape branches along the sides and top of the trailer. It has the war wounds to prove it.
