Anyone else done this trip in January and is there anything we should be looking out for and is there any alternate routes to avoid any potential high snow fall areas? I'm used to driving in winter weather, but if I can avoid it, would be a more pleasant drive. Where do people stay along the way? Is diesel hard to find along the way?
We have drove I-15 from montana border to LA 3 times now. End of July will be the fourth time. One reason why we do this is because the interstate is amazing. 75MPH most of the time, some parts of utah are 80MPH. First time we went was November 06 and had no troubles at all. I heard that monida pass was treacherous but found its not like that at all. Divided highway through the mountains? Fantastic. If you have driven from calgary through golden, rogers pass, then you have nothing to worry about. This is a piece of cake compared to that.

Jan. you risk snow at the passes and even road closures - Grants Pass and through the Siskisyous in S. Oregon and into N. Calif....You can even has some ice and snow through the low lands at times.
Oregon requires that you carry chains at all times.
the OP is writting about I-15, not I-5.
where do you get the USA map you have in you signature line? I want to go the same and colour in the states! Is there one for canada?
