We volunteered at our local humane society (Oregon)for 10 years and really enjoyed it. Now that we're fulltiming, occasionally we'll drive by a humane society/animal shelter and go check it out - not for adoption purposes (although Zoey the dog would love a constant friend), just to see it - sort of like an open house. Anyone else do this?

By the way - in Colorado Springs now and they have a wonderful humane society!

Nope. Those animals do need homes for sure and I love animals. I give the shelters credit for caring for the animals.

IMHO most of these shelters are just building a non-profit tax write off money making business out of getting donations for expansion and to accomplish their goals they over restrict the release of any pets to good homes. By over restricting they are forcing good would be pet owners to purchase at puppy mills instead of getting a pet that really needs a home. Any pet at my home gets treated like it is his home. That pet gets everything they need and goes to the vet when ever needed. My new ACD, 16 months old, was purchased from a puppy mill and flown to us for the cost of about $1500. I would have liked to get a pet from a shelter but like I said in a previous post. I could fill out loan papers and qualify for a $2 million loan easier.

They are doing this on the backs of these pets. Shame on them.

Visit them? Are you kidding me? My wife and daughter would have the trailer full before i could get away. Nice to see the poor things to go to loving homes, just no more at mine.

No, I don't like window shopping. I'd want to take one home with me.

I don't go to strip clubs for the same reason!

I don't visit shelters when we travel, as I don't need to even think about "saving" another dog. I work/volunteer with a Greyhound rescue group (temporarily not working due to chemo treatments) , and that good deed got me a 2nd greyhound (that I had NOT planned on), plus I now have moms ornery dapple weiner dog, so I don't need any further temptations. It's feels good to do work for these groups, and the animals enjoy the attention. Hopefully I will be able to get back to the hounds by september or maybe sooner.

By the time you purchase an ACD from a breeder, crate for shipping, and air fare the cost escalates rapidly. I had a border collie before. He was an abused dog that showed up on my door step. He was with us for about 8 years. He had a $300 vet bill every month for meds etc. After being on seizure meds for 5 years he finally went into a grand mal seizure that he never recovered from. Putting him down was the hardest decision I have ever made. Buddy was the border collie. Jake the ACD. When I said puppy mill I was a little sarcastic. Jake was from a breeder, 16 months old and neutered when we got him. Jake was pick of the litter but lacked some minor show qualities that is why tail is not docked. Very smart dog and learns things quickly.

We always stop at the Pet Adoptions at the local Petsmart when we're restocking supplies for our cats.

We've stopped a couple times at Best Friends in Kanab Utah. It's quite an impressive operation...They have an RV park where you can make reservations to stay.. We haven't stayed there but it looks like a nice place to take a couple days rest....
