Before I got rid of my Suburban my Honda rode in the cargo area with no gas smell. Now it rides in the bed of my pickup truck. I have a hitch welded to my frame or my trailer and I still wouldn't put my generator back there, I prefer to have it hidden from prying eyes.

I agree with 2OLDMAN - The gas cap that has the off position isnt the only place that has gasoline smell. The bottom line is the generator is going to smell gasoline probably no matter what you do.

Placing the generator inside a plastic tub with lid is about the only choice you have. Then you got two to worry about.

I really hate the idea of putting those generators in a lock up case on the outside. You still hear about all these stories of the generators running off in the middle of the of the night. My theory is "out of sight - out of mind"

Even putting the generators in a plastic tub and keeping them inside the trailer when transporting will have the problem what to do with them hen you are at the camp site. No way would I sit these generators outside under the trailer or anywhere else around the camp site. If they are in plain sight they are going to walk on you. I have a photo here somewhere where a guy had his 3KW Honda Generator chained to a tree at the camp site and they cut the tree down to steal his honda during the daytime when they had left the site to go get groceries. No way will I leave my high dollar generator unattended at a camp site...

My situation is perfect for hauling the generator which sits in the tailgate corner of my F150 truck. It is secured to the truck bed with a lock cable thru the handle. Additionally the truck bed has one of those "FOLD-A-COVER" folding hard plastic bed covers which locks and of course the tail gate of the truck bed lock. My single 2KW Honda sits out of the way from storage items and goes where I go. Never leaves the tail gate corner of the truck. When I need to use it I just pull it out onto the dropped tail gate and connect the trailer shore power cable to it. Carrying one on the other side of the truck tail gate side would not be a problem.

Interested problem you have.... I did see one of these pull out trays made up putting the generator inside one of the storage compartments under the trailer which I though was kinda neat... ??

Do you know how long it would take a Dremal Tool to cut thru a chain...

These two for carrying inside the trailer. The one on the right is an action-packer case..

I would mount a hitch receiver in the front and add a cargo tray for the generators, put a chain and through the handles and padlock them, and then place a cover over them so they are out of sight.

Tool box in the bed of the truck so it locks when you run into the store or resturant to eat. That or they go in the camper. They will walk if you leave them unsecured and in plain site.

Just purchased the yamaha 2k. I was wandering what you do with your gens at night if you are using them? I worry about somebody stealing them. I thought about putting them in my truck bed and locking the camper shell, maybe cracking a window on my camper shell to let exhaust escape. Any ideas?

If it is running at night and someone attempts to steal it you will know immediately as the power goes off. If mine are running at night the only reason would be to power the AC and that will require both of my Honda's. Now the question is how far can a thief run carrying your generator(s) in the time it takes you to get out of bed, into a pair of pants and arm yourself (as you deem appropriate). They won't get far if they are trying to flee with two Honda's that are securely chained to my TT. A yappy dog at this point will buy you some more time and them a career change.

One method I saw recently at a CG was to thru bolt the genny through a 4' X 2" sheet of plywood from below and then park the trailer on the plywood. Short of jacking up your trailer they would have one hell of time getting it free. I'm sure you could rig some sort of alarm that would be triggered by any movement and then insure that to get a cutting tool on your chain would require movement. Probably the simplest preventative measure would a bright motion sensing light adjacent the generator. Be creative, how about a string of beer cans with pebbles in them draped around the genny? Try and get a site between folks that have a nicer genny than you who don't do any of the above and you should be golden.

I see Skip beat me to my suggestion. Let her go without the generators once or twice and then approach the question about hauling them in the trailer.

I had a welder reinforce and beef up the tube bumper and then I added a receiver hitch. I have a cargo basket that holds my generator (a very big one). It's a great plan as long as you have everything locked down. I have the basket padlocked to the hitch, and I have the generator bolted down to the basket. I drilled a hole through the plate I used to bolt it so I can add a padlock too. Most thieves are opportunists. They like easy snatches. If it looks like a pain in the rump to steal, they usually won't. Now, if they really want it, nothing will keep them from taking it but your old friends Smith and Wesson. I figured that if they took the time to circumvent all the padlocks I've used, someone would notice them by then.

Here's an idea. Get a propane conversion kit for the generator.
