Be careful w/ heavy deet on young kids. We use off. We also bring tiki torches and citronella candles for the campsite. A trick for the black flies is to hand a plastic baggie w/ water and a penny in it. It should repel the black flies. Haven't tried it yet, learned about it over the winter, we will try it this summer. We also keep a regular fly swatter and an electric sly swatter/zapper thing that looks like a tennis racket in the TT. Our daughter is really freaked out by bugs but we still have a good time. Sometimes we will eat inside to avoid the bugs.

I didn't quite understand this one.
Could you elaborate on it?

Looked it back up because I couldn't remember the specifics. I couldn't find the posts on here where I learned about it, but I found this link

Basically- fill a ziplock baggie about half full w/ water and throw in about 4 pennies, close the bag and hang it up at your site. It should repel the flies.

I used to be worried about putting deet on my children until my youngest came down with West Nile Virus several years ago. That will scare you into using something to protect them from the nasty mosquitos. She is what we call mosquito bait - if they are in a mile radius they are going to bite her.

We almost always put up a screen house and throw an RV patio mat down on the ground. That gives the girls a place to sit and not be bothered by the creepy-crawlies but they are still outside enjoying the campsite. We also burn citronella candles everywhere.

I'm going to order that hand-held therma thing. That looks like a great option for further protecting our younger DD - thanks for posting!

One shiny new penny is all thats needed. something about the reflection or shine that repels them. As for other than DEET, Skin So Soft is good for gnats, flies and the like. Vanila extract works for gnats also as well as Deet. Garlic is a repellent for skeeters but I definately use OFF or other product with DEET in addition to one of the above.

Here are my suggestions from natural to extremely chemical. In the past, I've taken garlic pills (get the unscented version) two weeks prior to my trip. Garlic is a natural repellent and I'd say it works fairly well. Of course, your skin may exude the smell of garlic but there are pills that claim otherwise.

Off makes effective products and I am generally pleased with how well they work. Of course, this stuff is full of chemicals. I like to use it in combination with garlic pills.

Thirdly, and I've never used this stuff myself but it claims to not only repel critters but actually kill them. It's military-issue insect repellent and is meant for use on equipment not your skin so the toxicity levels are probably very high.

We use a thermacell repellent lantern by the door to prevent bugs from getting into the trailer. We've also used Deet and the Off clip-on mosquito repellent both worked really well for us and the kids. We primarily use the lantern and the clip-ons, but we have Deet for back up, just in case.
