Man, cameras everywhere. The society of surveillance. I don't much think I like what our modern world is becoming, but that's progress I guess.

Here is a recent video of a bicycle accident recorded from one of the bikes cams. Pretty scary stuff..Although if you look at the full video I'm not a fan of their riding technique, but the accident almost seemed on purpose.
Drop down to 2nd video in article
They did eventually get the guy in the car but of course he reported the car stolen minutes after the accident

And just the other day on the news some guy got 50+ years for videoing the police.....the judge threw out the case, but the state has appealed that judgement. So, as I said -- be careful who you videotape!!!!

50+ years? I call BS unless there is FAR more to the story than just shooting video of the police in a public location.

Don't buy into the line that some police officers use that only members of the working press are immune from such laws on the books that prohibit video or film recording of officers. The press is not required to have a license from the government to operate. ANYONE can publish in this country, therefore "freedom of the press" is liberally defined.

I have a security camera. it is LINE 2 on my DVR.. I can (If I choose) set it to record say 8 hours (THing holds over 200 hours) without stopping.
Should anything happen... Well, see above.. Thankfully, to date, nothing has happened.

Could the OP please give us the make and model of the camera he purchased. I would be interested. Any other info anyone could give me about these systems would be appreciated. For one can one both view and record the pictures at the same time? Could one record the output of a backup camera also?

I had thought about one that streams to my phone, but not sure how that would work while my phone is using it's BT connection to the vehicle. Not to mention battery life.
I bought this one.

And a 16GB card, and will be hardwiring it into acc power, so it will turn on when truck turns on. Basically set it and forget it (until something happens), and it will overwrite the oldest footage.
I've used it for a couple months now, and it's great. Oh yeah, and it's night vision is pretty decent also.

I highly recommend a dash cam. I've seen more than one event caused by someone swerving in a lane, panicing, stopping, and causing a rear-ender, people who are unable to drive a manual drifting back down the hill onto another car, or just some jerk who decides to pop it in reverse. It also will help with car/pedestrian or car/bicycle when it shows that the other party paid no heed to basic traffic laws.
Of course, do NOT let the other party know you have the camera. Hand the video over to the insurance company or the police. Otherwise, they likely will try to run to your vehicle and grab the SD card.
