I've been using a 50amp portable Surge Guard for about a year and a half; however, it appears to be belly-up. If I have to buy another, I'm considering a permanent install device. What are the pros and cons of each?

Ours is a permanent installation. I guess it's just my preference. I would however contact the manufacturer of your current unit and make arrangements to send it back for review and likely repair. Might just save a bundle.

I have sent an email to Surge Guard Tech Support, awaiting an answer. If I have to replace the unit, I'm leaning toward an permanently installed device. Getting a bit tired of lugging the portable in and out when I hook up.

The PI HW50C is an excellent unit with field replacable parts should you every have that problem. From available information it's better than SG.
.
Pros: Automatic, nothing to do once installed. The HW50C has a remote that displays V, A, HZ, error code and prior error code.
Cons: Installation including the data cable to the remote. In my rig it's installed w/o cutting any wires so removal is easy which is exactly what I did when I sold the last rig.
Prior error code use: You're out and about and there is low voltage. You're protected of course and then voltage returns to normal. You return and see the prior error code of low voltage and you are now more alert to the CG voltage.

I put mine in the compartment closest to the power inlet. I put new cable from the power inlet to the surge protector and spliced the cable going to the panel. Left enough extra wire to be able to bypass the surge protector in case of a failure. I carry the proper wire bugs and tape with my spare stuff.

I can't think of any "con's" by having a permanent mount.
As for a portable? It could be stolen, even chained. Its out in the elements. It could be forgotten when leaving a site (ever forget your water regulator  )
You could get lax and fail to use it on those quick overnight stays.
What did I leave out?

I have a portable, have had it for years. Not chained. Never had a problem with anyone taking it. Maybe I am lucky. No problem hooking up as I leave it permanently attached to my power cable.

My installation. At HD I bought 2' of shething and wire and installed it in the unit. Mounted HW50C next to ATS. Removed cable from ATS and reconnected both cables. Drilled hole to route data cable. Note: On the current rig the supplied 14' data cable was not long enough. Ordered a 30' data cable online for $1.67 which included S&H - believe it or not. Note: The data cable looks like a phone cable but it is not as 2 wires are crossed. The data cable is available at various stores but hard to beat home delivery.
With this type of install the unit can be connected on the power cord input to the ATS or the CB panel output from the ATS. There are a number of posts on this topic and the basics are: Power cord install protects the ATS but the rig and ATS are not protected from a gen problem. Panel install does not protect the ATS but the rig is protected from utility power and gen. Relatively speaking the ATS is cheap. I've been on both sides of that discussion, but for this thread you have an option which is not available for the portable unit.
