Hi folks.

I need to get from Cleveland GA to Crossville TN in a relatively unexciting manner to accomodate the DW. We drove down US 129 over Blood Mountain and her feet were tingling so apparently that route is out. I don't see a lot of ways to get west to head north.

DW grew up in Leslie County Kentucky with Mom hollerin "He's gonna kill us!" so I can only accomodate her...
I drove to Hyden and I thought "I'm gonna kill us...." Scary stuff.

I've already suggested that we do it at night so she can't see down the mountains. Didn't go over too well.

Did a mapquest.com (they show terrain) and played with the routes a bit. The only way to avoid big mountains is to go south and cut over to I-75 to proceed north again. Take SR 400 South to SR 20 (Exit 15 at Cumming) and go west until you get to I-75. Then go I-75 north. Otherwise you'll be going over some honkin steep grades.

Of course the dear wife could take a nap while you go over Blood Mountain. Give her a book, a Nook or something else to read to keep her busy. It'd be cheaper than the extra gas to go the southern route.

First law of science: don't spit into the wind.
Keep on rollin'!

Xanax works for us.

Thanks folks; I was looking at the Cumming to I75 route.

I might take more than Xanax. LOL

Don't take US-127 north from Chattanooga. If she doesn't like Blood Mt. she won’t like Signal Mt. either. Take I-24 west to exit 155, TN-28 north will join US-127 in Dunlap TN. It's two lane, but straight with wide shoulders. You will still have to climb up to Crossville at the north end of the valley.
GA-20 from GA-400 to I-75 is ok, just slow with traffic. You can go down to I-285 just about as quick, but that not a lot of fun either.

I am not at home and do not have a Georgia map with me but I will try to tell you the non-mountainous way to get to Chattanooga. Then you can follow jaycocamprs direction from there. From Cleveland drive south to GA-400 and go to the Dawsonville exit (the one at the Premium Outlet Mall). This is either GA 52 or 53. Turn right and go through Dawsonville, turning left at the 4-way stop. Continue on this road until it splits. (The left curve will go to Big Canoe). Stay RIGHT. Go to the stop sign where the left turn goes to Elijay, (the right goes to Amicalola Falls SP). Turn LEFT. Just before you get to Ellijay take the ramp on the right up to the four-laned GA 5 and continue to the right toward Blue Ridge. At the light in Blue Ridge (McDonalds) turn left and continue to Macaysville, GA. At the four-way stop, turn left on what is now TN 68. Follow this to Ducktown, TN where you will turn left on US 64.This will take you through the Ocoee Gorge and to I-75 at Cleveland, TN. This is a lot easier than it sounds and if you have a Georgia map you can easily figure it out. Locals call this the "Apple Valley route". It is beautiful with rolling hills and mountain views but no steep grades or hair-raising dropoffs. I drove it twice a week for five years. Going over Blood Mountain is called the "Neel's Gap Route" and is to be avoided at all costs. Best of luck, lizzie

If you take GA-53 thru Dawsonville to GA-5 you can take GA-53 from Jasper on west thru Fairmont to I-75 at Calhoun.
Also If you take lizzies route to Clevland TN, you can take TN-60 to Dayton TN. The go north on US-27 to TN-68, and up to Crossville. This would save lots of miles. But TN-68 up the mountain doesn't have much shoulder, the guard rail is right there on the passenger side.

Took that route once. Huge mountain with a serpentine road on that route.

Thanks everyone.

How is US-76 from Elijay west to join US-411 south of Chatsworth?

If we do end up going through Chattanooga we'll be doing the US-27/TN-111/US-127 route; done that a few times with no issues.

Serpentine, narrow, slow and in some places mountainous.
