I'm getting ready to do my first oil change in my 82 winnebago chieftain,I need to know how much oil the 454 takes. I've heard diffrent answers on how much it takes.... One was 5 quarts in the pan 1 in the filter . One was 6+1... I'm gonna use a 2 quart filter so I need to get it right. Any help would be appreciated being as I have no books or manuals.

Start with 6 and check dipstick, add if needed. There were different capacities for that motor depending on the size oil pan used for the application, but the base seems to be 6.

The reason I'm asking is the old man has the wierdest cable looking dipstick with no marks on it so I have no idea where the level should be.once I figure it out I plan to mark it. It has an oil and tranny cooler so I figured 6 in the pan 1 in the filter but I planned on using the larger 2 quart so it would be a total of 8 quarts which would be easy to do since I'm using gallon jugs

I've got a 89 and it takes 7.5 quarts. Most places put in 6 and I tell them 7.5 would be better but they don't believe me until I start the engine.

My 87 Allegro 454 takes 7 Q. Thats how much it took last spring when I changed the oil and 1 filter. As usual I carry a quart or 2 just in case it needs a drink.

6 + 1 seems to be OEM standard.
