GM says

Drain your old oil.
Remove the filter and re-install the plug.
Add 5 quarts of fresh oil ( do not start the engine). Allow a few minutes for the fresh oil to work its way back to the pan.
This is your 1 quart low mark (If it is not correct I take a file and remark it.)
Now add 1 more qt of oil and wait a few minutes , this will be your full mark.
Install your filter
You can now start the engine and top off (aprox 1 qt)

NOTE: Any incorrect spelling is intentional to prevent those annoying popups.

Thank you guys so much for all the responses. If it had a decent dipstick I wouldn't have asked, like I said its a long cable like wire with no marks, I've been around trucks all my life and have never seen anything like this

Tony just change the oil on the level and use a file to mark quart low and full marks per bill h instructions and you will be set for life.

Van Hool buses have a long wire type dipstick. the oil end has a flattened metal end that is pressed on to the wire. The flat end has markings on it. perhaps your dipstick was like that at one time. Maybe the end got stuck in the bottom of the tube and got pulled off the wire end. It might be laying in the oil pan or thrown away.

As mentioned above though about draining oil and marking at 5 qts sound like a good idea to me!
