I own a 23 foot class C with a small slideout and I am leaving for Europe for four months..where the Rv is parked is not under cover and no overhanging trees is it best to leave the slide in or out? Thanks Les

I would bring it in just to avoid the possibility of heavy weather getting to it. You don't mention if there is a cover over the slide but if there is wind can ruin the cover, if no cover water may seep in on the sides or top. JMHO!

Bring it in. Be sure to sweep the top before withdrawing it. That will keep twigs etc. from tearing your seals. I get on my roof and sweep the slides just before leaving a campground.

Our slides came in this week, after being extended for 6½ months. It does NOT harm them to leave them out. However I think if I were leaving for 4 months, I would bring it in.

First, I'd check for obstructions, not just sticks and such as mentioned above (which is vital), but also on the inside, since people tend to leave things in the way of the slide path. A small object can leave some nasty scratches if it isn't found, and cabinet doors that might be in the slide's patch might cause big issues.

Once the path is cleared on both sides, I'd then bring the slide (or slides) in. The advantage of having them in when the trailer is not in use is more leak resistance, it is slightly harder for rodents to enter, and the trailer will be more resistant to bad weather.

Many folks park their RV's slides out for months at a time. I have done it myself, and over winter at that.

However I will second the "It is safer if you bring it in" comments. There are many good reasons to do that. Way less likely to leak (mine had developed a few leaks I had to plug) and greater wind/damage resistance.

You say there are no overhanging trees. but how about hail, hail fire and snow. Well Fire is going to be a problem should it happen, and it may be no snow where you are (don't know) but hail is a posibility and NO DAMAGE to the slide topper if it's retracted.

You ALWAYS store retracted. WHY? Simple.
1. Slide outs are more prone to leak when extended
2. IF the slide mechanism fails after storage, HOW do you get it in for repair when you cannot drive with it extended? VERY common complaint to RV service dept's. "My slide is extended and I cannot get it in, so how do I drive it to get it fixed???" Doug

If you are leaving your rig for awhile, it might be a good idea to get some PURE PEPPERMINT liquid and put it on some cotton balls in the basement and around the inside of the RV. It will keep rodents out. I do it every Winter, and it does work.
