My dh just started taking Lantus Insulin. He takes it at night and last night forgot to do it. It's Sunday and can't call the doc. His sugars aren't too bad. He is wondering if he should have taken his Insulin as soon as he remembered or just leave it and wait...he will monitor himself today regardless but we were curious what we should do.

Depends on when he realized that he had forgotten to take his shot. I did that once and remebered first thing in the morning when I check the level was high and took my shot. Another time I just waited till the regular time (I take it at 10PM) since my level stayed low all day.

If the sugar level is not out of wack just wait. Pushing sugar levels too low can be dangerous

I'd let your glucose reading be your guide but...get instructions for how to handle the situation directly from your doctor. It really SHOULD be part of the prescription dosing instructions. Diabetes is a disease that effects different people entirely differently so what works for one will not necessarily work for someone else.

My Doctor thinks I should start using Lantis,
I was under the impression that you did a test, then dialed in the dose on the pen.

This is a bit after the fact but a pharmacist can answer that kind of question (I missed a dose, what should I do?) and you can call one of them 24/7 somewhere.
Just posting this for future reference.

x2 My wife has been a diabetic for almost 60yrs, Even with her there a many variables to account for. Let YOUR OWN DOCTOR be your guide. Lantus is a long acting insulin, on my wife the effects last about 24hrs, so timing is important to her. The pharmacist only writes the dosing instructions that are given by YOUR doctor.
Trust only YOUR OWN DOCTOR, and get instructions on the what if circumstances.

Don't weary too much about it. Lantus is usually taken at night time and if you forget it your sugar will be a little whack till you start it again at night. I have been on it for more then ten years now and it is great stuff. I am a brittle diabetic and my readings would be going up and down like a roller coaster. After I got onto Lantus it has been under great control and no up and down all day and night.
