Considering the Rand McNally 5510. Advertising says that it has 13,000 campgrounds. Are they from Trailer Life or Woodalls? How well does this feature work? Have not seen any thing on map upgrades, do they charge for them?
Don't know who the original provider was for campgrounds (you could email Rand McNally and they might tell you), but in April 2012 they will add Woodalls data to what was there already, which seemed fine to me.
There are several ways you can search for campgrounds (stop points, nearby, etc).
You can download a user guide that might answer some of your questions. We have been using ours for 6 months and love it. We got the 5510 because I don't want DH to look at the screen anyhow!

PS.. the feature works great.
no map updates available yet but there will be a charge (their website says once a year at a competitive price). Also found this:
What is the Lifetime Map Program?
This program provides map updates as they become available. If you participate in the Lifetime Map Program, you will receive notice that the maps are available, and the maps will be downloadable via the Rand McNally Dock. The first time a map update is available for a device, the registered owner will receive a notice describing the terms and the one-time fee (currently $89.99) for Lifetime Maps. We recommend that you register your device as soon as possible so as to be informed of any updates or new features available.
We purchased our 5510 last July and find it very reliable. There was an upgrade recently on their website which provided several useful updates that users had suggested. The map update at 89.99 is a good investment in my opinion. We also have a 8000 series Garmin Nuvi and the directions are virtually identical. I really like the campground feathers in the 5510. It has many features which are handy for RVers.
Very happy with it. Has any POI you ever want. The POI icons are that of the company's (Exxon for example is an Exxon logo, Sheetz a Sheetz logo, etc). Very helpful to recognize at a quick glance. You can enter all the characteristics of your coach like height, weight, length, LP, etc etc and it will route, or not route you accordingly. It's not as intuitive as other units I've used but once you get used to the menu layouts, it's pretty easy.
I have the 7710 and it has campsites by category, private, State, Federal Blm, etc I also just downloaded Woodall’s entire camground inventory. It has been a joy to use.
2X for the Woodalls info in the RVND-7710, it's there so I imagine it's also in the 5510. (same sofware)
If you have an iPhone there is a app called RVParkFinder. It's from Good Sam and has thousands of RV parks in the palm of your hand. It's really amazing.
