I have a question:

Who determines the capabilities of the repair center?

I understand about towing to nearest repair facility but I can see a problem if the nearest facility cannot do the repair or they are not a warranty repair facility for the problem.
i.e. an Allison transmission problem when there are three levels of repair facilities for that transmission or a Chevy towed to Ford.
Using the above scenario that the nearest repair shop cannot do the repair an assumption could be made that if the RV operator had the platinum ERS with trip interruption then Good Sam would pay out more money for extra days.
It would seem that some way of determining where to go even if the shop was a little further may save costs and time of both Good Sam and the RVer.

I am not trying to stir the pot but the issue of going to a shop that cannot do the repair and then having a second tow to another shop is not new and has been posted I believe here and on another forum.

While many mechanics in independent facilities are well trained some are not...even the most currently trained and certified are not equipped to do major surgery on some critical items. While replacing a water pump or diagnosing an electrical failure is in most cases well within the capabilities of ASE certified mechanic diagnosing and more importantly repair of specialized components - such as an Allison transmission may not be. Certainly any vehicle still in a warranty period must be taken to a facility authorized by the manufacturer to perform warranty work.

I would suggest that allowing an RV owner to have their vehicle taken to the Chevrolet dealer in the same town as the Firestone dealer would be a possible solution. I would certainly pay an additional amount to the tow operator to continue another 5 miles pas the "network facility" to get me to the GM shop. There I have a greater degree of confidence that the mechanics have the latest information on technical issues as well as specialized tools which may be required.

As we know road service is in fact an insurance policy. As with all insurance policies the insured is betting he or she will need the insurance and is willing to pay the price; while the insurer is betting that the insured won't need the service and thereby makes a profit of the fee by virtue of not having to provide a service. This is the way in which folks called actuarials make their money. If an insurer sells more policies to folks who never or seldom use the service than they do to folks who do use the service the insurer makes money. I feel that the GS-ERS is reasonably priced as it is - so here's another approach; increase the annual cost of the ERS by some percentage say 15% and allow the RV owner the choice of facilities in a town, zip code etc. The fee increase accumulated from folks who never use the service or are perfectly satisfied with going to the network facility should cover the cost of allowing other RV owners to go to a facility of their choice in the same town or zip code etc.
