If you are buying a new vehicle my question is why an SUV? You can get a 1/2 ton that can tow more and fit your family just fine. If you are going with a pup then you could surely go with a midsize suv even tho with 3 kids that may be tight. Im no GM expert but that is an expensive vehicle to buy and from what I understand the MPGs are hardly better than the standard gas motor. Just something to think about instead of spending the extra money on the hybrid that you will never make up. You could put that extra money in a nice pup or even a travel trailer. Or just have the money for yourselves.

2 adults, 3 kids, and a golden retriever is going to be tight in a truck.

put a cap on the truck and the dog can go in back in a kennel(safest for the dog). Plus you can put all the stuff that you want to take that isnt in the trailer. Its a win win situation. I have 10 F150 and we travel with a 14yr old a friend and our toddler in a baby seat and there is plent of room to spare. Dog in kennel and all the other goods under the cap. you can get fans for the kennel if its hot out for all those who think its cruel. My dog loves it but was raised traveling in there.

I'm not the original poster but I know for me I wouldn't put my dog in the bed even with a cover. It gets 115 in the summers here, so in the bed it would be unbearable.

Well then I stand corrected on temps that maybe would be too high for a dog in the bed. Not real sure what temps they would encounter

I can understand wanting an suv for your family. Think about a 3/4 ton suv. You can get a used does excursion or you can get the 3/4 ton suburban. The limiting factor in the above mention armada is its payload. You need to understand that the weight of any passengers and cargo will cone off the payload. look at the sticker inside the door of any suv you look at subtract the above weight from it and that is what payload you have to absorb tongue weight from a TT. Remember when looking at a TT the dry it unloaded weight is useless and so is the brochure tongue weight. In reality most campers add about 1000-1500lbs or more to a trailer. So you can add that to a dry weight or use gvw to shop. Next figure about 13-15% of previous weight for your tongue weight. This will help you determine how feasible what you are asking is. Maybe a hybrid TT would work for you?
