My rig has only 36k miles and runs well on reasonably level ground. It cruises effortlessly up to and even past 70 mph. It's only a 33 footer without slides and weighs less than 13k lbs. But when I hit a hill ,it feels like I threw an anchor out the back. It seems to strain and hesitate even in lower gears. Does this engine have spark plug wirea or does it have the individual coils on each plug? Any ideas??

To the best of my knowledge all V-10 engines have individual coils.

my 2000 Ford V-10 F53 does. we weigh in at roughly 19.5K towing as much as 4400-lbs. i don't take steep hills fast...but i take 'em. if you're not a DIY type i'd have a qualified mechanic check the engine for you.

Is this a new issue or has it always done this?

If the answer is "always OK on flat, but slow on grades", perhaps the issue is to set reasonable expectations.

If a new issue, THEN start by replacing the fuel filter (max fuel demand is obviously under highest load). If that doesn't fix it, take it to someone familiar with the Ford V10 and your chassis.

The Ford V-10 engine has a coil on each individual plug, referred to as COP (Coil On Plug).

It sounds like you may have something wrong. My '99 V-10 slows down on hills but I downshift and keep the revs high (4000 to 4500 RPM); that is where your power is.

If the fuel filter doesn't take care of the problem, check to make sure that you don't have ignition problems or exhaust restrictions also. Good luck.

Johnnyhurryup,
I don't know how long you've been driving this particular rig but, the '99 V-10 units were of the 275 hp versions. Assuming your engine is in top tune, then you could, albeit at a fairly high cost, install the complete Banks kit on it. Our last coach, a '99 Bounder 34V came with the 275HP V-10, came with the complete Banks kit on it, installed by the previous owner.

Now, I cannot verify this but, in his words, IT'S A NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE!!!!! He stated, just before we drove away in it, that if he had it to do again, he'd install that Banks kit on it before he'd even take his first trip.

Now, we owned that rig for seven years. We drove it from San Diego to Moab UT for the Easter Jeep safari for all seven years. Now I don't know if you've been on 15 from San Diego to Vegas and beyond but, buddy, there's some serious long grades in that route. And, once you get close to Cedar City UT, it gets even uglier because of the altitude. And finally, I-70 from 15 to 191 (the turn off to Moab) has also some serious grades on it.

My point is, we made all of those grades at or near somewhere around 44-47 mph. And that's towing a genuine boat anchor Jeep wrangler. That motor never, and I mean never gave us any trouble the entire time we owned it. Yep, I was passed by quite a few rigs, but, I got there, and I made it back, several times. The V-10, at least the version I know, the earlier one, is not the most powerful engine on the planet but, it's a good engine and a dependable one. They say that thing can run at four grand from one side of the U.S. to the other and not skip a beat. Well, I tested that theory, almost half way, a few times and THEY were right.

So, to answer your situation, I'd do like Wolf says and check out the tune, make sure it's all up to snuff. Plugs, fuel filter, etc. Then, I'd take a serious look at the Banks kit for it. I think the P.O of our coach said it was around $3K to $3500. Just a thought here.

Had a full Banks on my 2001 Gulstream class C. Nice change in shift patterns, but that was about it. It certainly did not seem to have any appreciable increase in power and the mpg went down. Also, if you are considering a Banks, get an installed estimate - mine was just shy of 5k.

Thanks, I was wondering if it had ,and went bad, ignition wires. Since it doesn't, I'll have my mechanic change the fuel filter. I'm thinking that sitting all winter long might cause condensation to build up in the fuel tank and now the filter could be clogged. It certainly worth a try.....Thanks.
