Bad gas or failing wires/coils sound very plausible. With a fuel filter you should notice more often such as a freeway on ramp or any hard acceleration. Plus the fuel filter could be mounted in the fuel tank and can be difficult and costly to replace. Try a couple of cans of Seafoam along with a fresh tank of gas first. Then go after the plug wires. Don't forget about the air filter also. Save the fuel filter for last, if it's located in the fuel tank.

For what its worth,I have a 99 tri v 10,35000,miles.tow a 2008 saturn.I climb all hills at 38-45 mph.the v-10 has the largest radiator ford makes ,NEVER GETS HOT.and even though other rigs pass me ,I know ill get there in do time,and in one piece.Im to cheep to spend 3-5k for banks not worth it,

If your cruising expectations are 70 mph you may be expecting too much on the hills. I have the same engine in my 1998 30’ Itasca and have traveled over many hills (see map below) and never expect to exceed 30 mph on real steep grades. How is your MPG? If you’re getting over 8 mpg in flat country I’d say that the engine is doing its thing A-OK.
As mentioned before this engine functions well at high rpm and you’ll get high rpms on a steep climb with no damage to the engine with no overheating.

I bet on frame fuel filter will cure your problem. I agree with others, you need to be at 3500 to 4000 rpms to get most power. You still will not speed up the hills. I just decided to relax and enjoy the scenery. Good Luck!!

Went the Banks route after one year of the stock 275hp V-10. Sure, it was pricey, but we go up the grades a lot better at 4000rpm. Didn't change the gas mileage.

What about after checking the tune up of the engine & fuel filter replacement, adding the 5 Star tune to the computer.

We have a 99 V10 & every time it leaves our driveway it weighs at least 25.600 GV loaded trailer & all & I got to say, it aint no race car, but I'm pleased with how it performs on flat ground & hills.
I got to say though as well, I drove trucks up & down the east coast for about 20 years, 238 Detroits & 673 F model Macks with recaps slapping me in my back & anything better than that is a pure pleasure.
I just had to remind myself, now my neck is hurting, let me go get the ibprofin bottle.

My 1999 Bounder with the V10 was a workhorse in the mountains. Spent time to Alaska and back and all over the western mountains and at between 3500-4000 RPM towing we were always around 40 MPH even on the steepest grade. If your 275 HP V10 won't perform like that, then it certainly needs looking at.

Going back to my earlier post, one of the first things one needs to do when moving from a car or light truck to ANY heavy vehicle is SET REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS.

This Caterpillar Corp document helps do just that. Makes no difference what brand or fuel the engine uses, HP is HP. Said another way, the amount of power needed to move a certain shape and weight vehicle is the same, irrespective of what fuel it uses.

99 Four Winds Infinity 34' with slide and 8k in tow. Climbs that pulled me down to 25 I now run at 40-45 with just a Banks chip and K&N air filter on my V10. It would do better with a free flowing exhaust. MPG stayed the same.
