My by pass system works perfectly, but I still cannot understand what prevents the water from entering into the tank via the hot water pipe when the system is in by pass mode, and I am hoping some one can give me an explanation.

My system is as follows: It has one valve in the incoming cold water line (call it valve 1).
Then there is a by pass line in front of that valve that goes to the out going hot water line, and in that line there is another valve, (call it valve 2).

In normal mode, Valve 1 is open and valve 2 is closed which makes perfect sense to me
In bypass mode, valve 1 is closed and valve 2 is open sending the pink stuff to the hot water line. I don't understand what prevents the pink stuff from entering the tank via the hot water line, but for some reason it doesn't, and it does go through the rest of the hot water lines

Is there some sort of a check valve in the outgoing hot water line at the tank?

If anyone can explain it I sure would appreciate it

My hot water heater bypass has the third value as shown here.

I was wondering how the two valve models were working my self haha.... Thanks for the post... Now I am smarter about it...

My three way has a check valve on hot outlet....looks like a threaded nipple but has an internal check valve.

There are also one valve plus check valve solution. The one valve is a Y valve the switches water to the inlet or to the cross over pipe.

The pic you posted is a 2 valve system. The 1 and 2 valve system uses them, the three valve does not need one. I prefer the three valve as sooner or later the check valve will fail and it can be a pain to change.

I thought our suburban water heater had the check valve at the entry to the heater at the (bottom)of the tank. No water in so no water out. Am I wrong??
