If your 55 is in good shape we could use one at a rural clinica de salud, which is a first-aid station. I brought down a pair of US Battery GC-2's but the 20 amp "Smart Charger" isn't robust enough to keep these batteries charged between blackouts in the hurricane season. Many times, 5 hours without power than four with, then another 8 without. A generator won't work because of lack of funds to build a separate building for it. Hurricanes saturate everything unless housed in a really well designed structure. A good 55 amp charger PLUS the 20 amp smart charger will work. You probably saw my earlier question asking about inverters. A friend is coming down with hopefully a 300 watt sine wave unit that can run CFLS charge a defibrillator, and run the SCT FM emergency transceptor.

Not sure Optima has a group 27. Small are about 55 amp hours and large D31T is 75 amp hours. If they are end of life I think it seems a bit early and probably helped along with too high of float voltage. Some have had success in reviving Optima with a better charger and some others have against all recomendations added water.

smkettner,
You are right, they are 55AH and they are four years old,we use the unit about 6 or 7 months a year for the last 4 years. My thoughts were that if I am not getting the correct charge into them, it is cheaper to replace the converter than the batteries.
I think my charger may have ran a disulficition on them, they were really hot, and didn't seem to be taking a charge. Now the cases are warm but they are charging.
I was a cabinet maker by trade but a back yard mechanic by choice, but I certainly don't know a lot about some of this stuff. That's why I come here!

Is 60 amp adequate? I have been running 2-12 volt AGM series 27 for some time now, am happy enough with the batteries but they get pretty hot when sitting on shore power for extended periods of time with low usage.
My biggest concern is overcharging and incorrectly charging AGM batteries.
Would love to hear from anyone with experience at this.
For the same price, you could get it from a real company with tech support and real people (Friendly too) AND probably actually have it in stock. I'd give Bestconverter a shot to help you as so many have. Fantastic tech support. www.bestconverter.com

It hit me like a ton of bricks a few years ago when I was more naive than I am today! After about 20 minutes on the phone diagnosing my electrical problem (for FREE I might add) I had the nerve to ask if I could save a dollar at my local dealer. After a quick pause I felt like a total idiot and ordered right up and continue that philosophy when somebody is willing to help me like that.

Will the same hold true for the PD4645 45 Amp Converter? It is a direct replacement for my older Magnetek 7345 and is intended to fit into the space of the 7345. I would have to find a new place for a 9000 series converter.
On the PD site, it states that the PD4645 has three voltage outputs: storage at 13.2, normal at 13.6 and boost at 14.4. If I am using AGM batts, shouldn't a charger be able to go higher than 14.4?
