No one has mentioned the reduction in MPG pulling a toad.

You're right of course. Since I almost always have my toad I don't know what the reduction is. I have read other posts that it is about 1 mpg. Of course, the size of the toad has some effect.
I don't think you can justify a toad on cost alone. You have to save a lot of gas to overcome the cost of equipping a car to become a toad.

Since I DO own a toad, maybe I should not answer this. But the bottom line for the above question is convenience of the individual involved. In our case, we already owned a Honda before we traded our fifth wheel for a Class C, so the only extra expense we had was the tow bar etc, which was somewhat offset by selling our fifth wheel hitch. For us, having a toad equals more convenience. Sometimes we like to do things apart from each other, namely I play golf while she goes shopping. She drops me off at the golf course and goes on her way. That would not work with our 31 ft Class C since she doesn't feel comfortable driving it in downtown traffic or looking for a parking space in small towns etc. So like most other questions involving RV's it becomes very personal, just like Fifth wheels versus Class C's or travel trailers etc. What someone else does really doesn't matter except to look at their experiences and see other options that maybe you had not considered. Good luck with your choice either way.

No one has mentioned the little tow dollies for the toad.
I'm thinking that we can bring either compact home vehicle behind the c when we think we may need it. Or not.
We both drive compact cars at home, so would not need a 'new' vehicle for the toad. No huge added expense with the tow dolly, other than the dolly, of course.

No toad here either!! Our 24 foot Regency GT24 MB allows us to go most places and park easily. We plan ahead for shopping, sight seeing, etc., and park for the night when traveling. Also with the Basset Hound aboard we love the convenience the Regency offers, and ability to use the on-board generator for his air-conditioning needs while we shop, eat, or take a very short tour. We still never leave him if the temps are very hot in case the generator had a problem. We wouldn't be able to do this with a toad.
We did rent a 4 wheel drive SUV when we went to Glacier National Park so we could do the "Going to the Sun Road" and wander in the awesome National Forest areas in the vacinity.

I have a 29foot class C and carry a toad on a car dolly. For whomever said but nobody has said what the MPG would drop to towing a toad. I can tell you I loose about 1 MPG towing, vs not. I also get 30 MPG with the toad, and about 8 1/2 with the MH. No brainer if you are going to tour.

My wife, 4 kids (4-13) and I don't tow, and we find it can be a pain. We went to the Smokey Moutains, and and to unhook to drive through them. Gas, Gas, Gas.. WOW. Out next will be either a TT or a 5w with a vehicle.

I live in the Smokeys why did you need to unhook your toad? I have friends with TT and Fiver's they don't do better then 8 MPG. My V10 never has a problem here in Mnts. With my toad 8 to 8 1/2 MPG with toad my scan gage says that, not mickey mouse math. As far as towing with toad I drop by a .05 not enough to count.

We've done several types of traveling: toadless when we're mostly sightseeing from major roads and camping in a different town each night, like going to Alaska or Nova Scotia. You just learn to plan ahead a little bit - and on days when most of the day was spent driving, we'd eat a BIG lunch, then just have soup-and-sandwiches for dinner camped at the RV park. There's been other times when we parked for several days in one place, then explored from there with the toad. Or - if we're driving to ONE distant destination, like Yellowstone, for example - we simply rent a vehicle when we get there. I guess we sort of weigh "how much will we use the toad" with the additional cost of towing and wear-and-tear on the vehicles.
Our 28' Class C fits in 2 nose-to-nose parking spaces - can't say that we've ever had problems finding a place to park; we don't mind walking a short distance to get to where we need to be?

This is always an intresting subject. We have two friends and their wifes that always tow a toad and each wife drives a car. They both feel very limited if they want to go some place and there is not a car for them. Even take both on a 3 day weekend or a cross country trip.. I know who is right here. How ever feels the way you do, like all subjects like this..
