Spring or fall Joshua Tree National park, lots of hiking/biking paths, not too hilly so good for all. Very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Spring and fall are very nice.

You get within 1 hour of Diego in the summer and its too hot , hot, hot. IMO>

In the cooler weather - Sam's Family Spa in Desert Hot Springs is fun for kids - nice pools and hot pools and lots of ducks and swans to watch and feed.
