We will be ordering a new motorhome at the end of this year and trading in our current one. There is a long lead time from the manufacturer, 6 months. My question is, how do you establish a trade-in value? Do dealers anticipate what the value will be in 6 months or just wait till it comes in to establish a final price? Also since we will not be using our current motorhome in that 6 month period, would a dealer consider taking in the trade when the new one is ordered? Obviously some sort of escrow would have to be involved if we did that.

I'm sure the dealer would be thrilled to have a shot at selling your trade, before your new unit is even delivered! That would be the perfect deal for them, as there would be no carrying costs involved on their side.

Why don't you get two prices on the new motorhome, one with trading yours in and the other an outright purchase without a trade that way you'll know exactly what they are giving you for a trade and then try to sell yours for the 6 months you are not using it asking somewhat more than they are giving you to cover difference in sales tax and a little profit for your time. There are plenty of places to list yours for sale including e-bay which is where I sold mine.

Not sure about your state, but in WA state the dealer (you) can deduct the price of your trade-in from the cost of the new MH in calculating how much sales tax you need to pay. Which could off-set the lesser price you'll probably get for trade-in vs. selling it yourself?

Charles has good advice.

I agree 100%, thats exactly what I would do.

This gives you 6 months (plenty of time) to try and sell yours yourself for more than he's offering for it.

If you manage to do so, great, you're that much $$ ahead in the game. If not, after 6 months when he has the new unit in and ready for you, go ahead and let him have yours on tradein then.

However, you would have to expect that any tradein value he gives you NOW, it will probably be somewhat less 6 months from now. If dealer is willing to lock in a tradein amount now that will be good in 6 months, great, make sure you get that in writing! However, I wouldnt expect that. And if he does do that, it may well be a 'low-ball' tradein offer.

No matter what your taking a Bath if your trading in a 1 year old coach ? of that price range but then it may not matter to you. Prices can be compared your current coach wholesale price vs discounted new coach or current coach retail vs FULL retail on the new coach. I doubt they care your using it since they will be making Big $$ off you anyway as long as you dont trash it. I would try to sell it myself in the 6 months before to offset at least some of the loss.
Hope the new coach is what you want so you dont have to do this again!

My post's are my opinion The advice, comments etc are free and worth what you paid

As soon as you signed the final delivery papers, you already have lost thousands of dollars. Just check out different dealers lots, and browse the used units, or see how much of a discount is now being offered on NEW 2011 unit. Take your heart pills with you, just in case.

Presumming you are going to register the new HM in FL, You would need to outright sell the nearly brand new old rig for somewhere around $13K more than the trade in value to offset the sales tax paid when trade in value is factored into the sale. Could be worse if you have to pay local county taxes also.

If money is not of concern and I suspect it's not, I'd get rid of the nearly brand new rig sooner than later just to get out of any rare possiblilty that something could go horribly wrong. (fire, hurricane, etc)

What brand of Motorhome is quoting six month lead times?? I did not think the market is that strong. You may want to check around on delivery times.
