The break up of the Yukon River at Dawson City is one of the spring indicators. The river ice departed this morning at about 9:30 a.m.!

The earliest the ice has gone is April 28 in 1940.
The latest was May 28 in 1964.

The Yukon River is flowing from right to left in the photo. In the center of the photo is the Klondike River of gold rush fame. In the center background, behind Dawson City, is Midnight Dome and you can make out the road that runs to the top. This photo was taken from the "Top" road, a few kilometers after you get off the ferry headed for the Alaska border. The ferry operates from the landing at the far left hand side of the photo of town. You can see the road running along side the Klondike River, headed on toward Whitehorse. There is a bridge just out of the picture that crosses the Klondike and there are a couple of RV campgrounds, just the other side of the bridge.

For those that have never seen the Yukon River, it is a clear beautiful river in Whitehorse and on to the headwaters. Not too far below Whitehorse, it is joined by the Milk River and becomes the muddy mess you see on down stream. The Klondike River is another clear water river and in the photo above, you can see where the clear water is joining the muddy water of the Yukon and it stays muddy till it empties into the ocean in far western Alaska.

Joe, the White River contributes greatly to the Yukon River's murkiness. The White contains much glacial silt. The Donjek flows into the White too ... again, more murkiness.

I remember flying over the White River, following it to the Yukon River, then continuing northward to Dawson City. The White flowing into the Yukon River causes a signficant change in the Yukon River's colour.
