This is our first time dry camping and as we are filling up the 100 gallon fresh water tank it dawned on me that this is over 800 lbs of water. Is it normal to drive down the highway to your destination with a full fresh water tank? I recognize it would be ideal to fill up when we arrive at our destination but I don't think they have available pottable water. Also is it legal and ethically ok to let your grey water go into the grass when dry camping? I never had but just want to prepare if we overfill the grey tank.

I don't travel with a lot of water but many do. Here's where to fill up:

The gray water discussion is often hotly debated, and I'm sure it will be again right now.

that 800-lbs represents a small fraction, a tiny, miniscule fraction of the total weight of your DP so don't sweat the weight. we neber leave home or a campground for the next campground without a full or nearly full tank of fresh water (85-gal for us). we used to carry smaller amounts relying on filling our tank at the CG. but that all changed years ago after we pulled into a campground/motel late one night and discovered, during the registration process, that the CG water system was polluted with e-coli. from that point on we never travel without a full tank of fresh water. besides, you answered your own question...your destination has no potable water. and no, it's not OK to dump gray water on the ground without permission and there are precious few places that will give you permission.

1) We never haul that much water.....but if you do, be sure to consider how much weight your PU will haul. Usually, we fill up at the town that's the closest to where we camp.

2) Most states have laws against dumping the gray water onto the grass - or ground -- or dry bushes. It's something I've done all my life, however, now it's against the law. Since this is your first time boondocking, you probably don't know that the gray water stinks to high heaven when it's been in your holding tank for very long.

Look under the forum area for modifications....you'll see a thread I started about the modifications we've made to haul 2 barrels for hauling water and hauling out the waste water.

OK on the fresh water tank. Do that too when unsure of water supply at destination. Big no no on dumping grey water. I wouldnt like to arrive somewhere only to find the guy dumped all his sink and bath water on my camping spot, neither would you, right?

If I'm going somewhere that I know doesn't have water available I fill the tank up. If I'll have hook-ups I only take a few gallons for use on the road.
I doubt you'll find many places where it's okay to dump gray water.

I dont know what concerns you may have but I carry full fresh water quite ferquenty when boondocking.
I also dunmp grey water by using a hose when necessary, but not in campgrounds.

When traveling I ALWAYS travel with a full water tank ( as full as I can get at least) and if at all possible EMPTY gray and black water tanks.

IN SOME LOCATIONS....it IS PERMITTED to drain GREY WATER ONLY via a small diameter hose ( I use a old dead water hose...not my drinking water hose)and drain it down a hole...gopher or otherwise...at a SLOW RATE...so it doesn't foam up or anything. And this is after asking permission and receiving it from the CG manager. It IS NOT an open endorsement of the procedure.
