 I'm trying to adjust the idle mixture screws on my old pick up. It's an 83 Chevy with a Rochester carb. It has some odd mixture screws on it that look like a small rectangle or almost oval, maybe 3/16 x 1/8 or so. I don't know what shape those are called. Is there a special tool for those and does anybody know where can I find one. I've look online and can't find nothing.
I thought I had every tool known to man but I guess I don't. It's kind of too tight of a fit to get in there with a needle nose pliers. Anybody know of anyway else to turn those? I don't think a socket will fit.
It's a long ways to the auto parts store. I'll keep trying. I'll find something.

Could it be that carb still has the OEM white plastic overcaps? If yes, use needle nose, squeeze till they break but do not wiggle or bend. Regular slot screws would be beneath. This only applies if the screw heads are definetly plastic.

E-bay listed as "Snap On Carb Distributor Adjusting Tool TM64" ends 1 day 18 hrs, currently 1 bid at 9.95
I have the same set and I think the first socket(3rd attachment) is the oval shape you need.(I wished he showed an end photo to be sure)

I didn't think it still had the plastic caps but I could be wrong. I'll go check again tomorrow during the day.
I think I know what you mean by the plastic caps, but didn't those almost cover the whole hole where the screw is? I'll look closer tomorrow, it's kind of dark and cold out right now. Thanks.

 Well at least I found out what I need, it's called a "double D socket". Now I just have to go find someone who sells one. I guess I going to drive to town tomorrow. I need to buy some other parts anyway.
It's only 70 miles away, that's all. Oh, and that's one way. Takes me all day just to go to town and buy supplies for the week. I feel like I live on the moon sometimes.

Slip a piece of vacuum hose over the screw and remove them then cut a slot in the "double D" . reinstall them seating them lightly and back out 2 turns for inital adjustment.

This is an emissions style carb and came from the factory with caps over the adjusters so not to let people adjust them. If you are having problems you should remove them and spray some Gum Out in the holes to clean the idle curcuits and then reinstall. Turn them in till they bottom out and then back them out 2 to 2 1/2 turns. After warming the engine you shouldn't have to turn them more tha a half turn to make it idle smooth if not look for other problems.

This sparked my interest and as I got the last post, I was surprised someone else thought of my solution. vacuum hose is what we used in the old days too. It works, try it. just leave the hose on and they will be there for the next time you think you need to do an adjustment.
