3116 & 3126 fan pulley has a zerk fitting location on engines up to engine serial number HEP15357 (engines produced before 1/03). Engines produced after that date have sealed bearings.

Both sealed and greasable bearing housings/bearings are available from Caterpillar as replacements. So, a greasable could have been replaced with a sealed and visa versa.

What would really help would be an extended zerk fitting. I've seen zerks an inch long on aircraft. As it is now on the fan bearing, I had to grind off one side of a grease gun fitting to slide onto the zerk behind the fan pulley. With a longer zerk, it would stick up above the pulley so a standard gun would fit onto it. That wouldn't eliminate the requirement to open the engine hatch, but I like to see the top of the engine occasionally. I need to look through my old parts bins and see if I may have a longer zerk somewhere.

To lube the zirk fitting on my coach, I purchased a smaller hand held lube gun, they have a smaller diameter fitting that fits in between the pulley and the cyl. head with no problem.
A few squeezes on the trigger and its done.
Try Autozone or Pepboys

I was curious----Just looked at my grease gun. It is now loaded with 3OZ. Marine-Multi-purpose-water resistant bearing grease.
The water resitant part is not needed.
You can get regular chassis lube grease also in the 3OZ. size.
I thought a grease specifically for bearings would be a good choice.

Just remove the 4 bolts and slide back the metal engine plate.
I kinda feel for the zirk with my left hand, find it, then just guide it onto the end of the Zirk. If you are real nimble, then crawl in deep with a flashlight and mechs. mirror and once you find it you will see why its kinda difficult to see, everything is sooo yellow, as was my zirk and it sets directly behind the pulley and cyl. head

They make a grease needle that I use to grease the bearing on my Cat engine. Works great.

Today I finished the modification and now have the lube line coming down on the right side of the motorhome near the batteries. The worst part of the job was getting off the old zerk fitting. I couldn't reach it with anything because it's so close to the pulley. I really didn't want to remove the fan and pulley to get at the zerk. Instead, I used my Dremel tool to grind away a small indentation in the pulley rim so I could get a socket in place. It worked like a charm and I don't think the little bit I shaved off will have any effect on the balance. It was a bit more difficult than I thought, but I will not have to take apart the bed to get to the fitting anymore.

Thanks to all for your help. The picture on the CAT Club website tells it all.
